Autoparts store will scan the computer for you for free.
They will give you the trouble code/s that make the check engine light come on.
You can just google the number they give you if they don't tell you what it is/means.
Should look like P0130 or P1429 and could be more than one trouble code.
The repair should be easy once you have the code because it will tell you what the problem is.

Vehicle code scan fo Pontiac Montana

If the "check engine" or "service engine soon" light is on, then the computer has detected and stored a trouble code ( DTC) and you need an OBD II code reader. the connection should be on the drivers side under the dash on the inside of the vehicle. In some states the local auto parts store will do this for free.

Need new berings on my 2004 montana do i need a special tool to do this

You should not need any "special tools" to replace the bearings. You will need an assortment of hand tools and a socket large enough for the axle nut.

It is not a hard job for a DIYer if properly equipped.

P.S. Most auto parts stores will rent any of the tools you may not have.

Need to replace O2 sensor

There are 3 sensors, one for each bank of cylinders and one after the convertor. All are 7/8 inch [ 22 milimeter ] hex. Some are very hard to remove without special tools, also make sure you know which one is faulty as they are quite expensive.

2002 pontiac montana with an occational starting problem

Go to Autozone and they will check your cars trouble codes for free and tell you what part you will need to replace. They are usually right 99% of the time. The crankshaft position sensor located behind the harmonic balancer maybe be bad. There is another crankshaft position sensor located on the engine block above and to the right of the oil filter. Or it could be the power train control module located to the right of the air cleaner box. This information is for the V6 3.4 engine. Buy the repair manual for your Montana and go to the engine performance section. The manual costs about $26.00

Check engine light

the only way you can retrieve these codes is with a code reader. it's cheaper than a scan tool. problem with these is it only reads the codes and the booklet tells you what the code means but it can't clear the code and it can't change the parameters to keep the codes from coming back. do me a favor and rate this ...thanks
