Question about 1998 Ford Explorer

1 Answer

My 98 explorer just started making this noise that sounds like knocking when i drive and turn, but not when sits idol. do you know what may cause this? Its coming from under the vehicle. that's all I know. I had my tie rod and ball joints replaced back in 04 or 05 I believe. I was told that this may be the problem, but not sure...hasn't been up on a lift yet for someone to look at with more knowledge than I. thanks

Well sounds like a cv joint. Basically front half axel shaft.

What can cause knock sensor to get bad on 2007 ford edge

Well the knock sensor does not make any noise. It senses the vibration in the engine if there is a spark knock to let the computer know to slow down the spark timing.
You probably have a weak piston or lifter or rod bearing making the noise.

Knocking noise around the front passenger wheel area!?

Do you feel it in the steering wheel? if so it could be the intermediate steering shaft. If not it could be a sway bar link or bushing.

I have a 2004 Ford Explorer with a knocking sound coming from the engine. Was told I could be the timing chain. But it's not. What else could be making a loud knocking sound? Thanks.

If your truck has the 4.6 or 5.4 V8 then you know it has two timing chains. The lifters could be causing the knocking noise. If it sounds like it's coming from the top then I would suspect lifters. If it sounds like it's coming from the bottom of the engine then I would suspect main or rod bearings.

The motor started making a clanking noise shortly after i left my house

Not much to go with here.

Firstly, check the oil level. Does the vehicle have a history of using oil? Low (or no) oil pressure can cause the bearings to make a heavy knocking sound

Secondly, does the noise only occur only while you are in motion? If there is no noise when sitting still, idling, then probably something in the drive train, other than the engine is the culprit. Now to go further with this thought...do you feel any vibration while driving and hearing the sound? If yes, check your wheel lugs to make sure they're not loose.

I don't like being so vague, but I'm not sure what you're experiencing

2000 Ford Explorer EB making noise in the front end?

Is it making creaking sounds, or knocking wrapping sounds from the
engine? Is it only while you are driving, turning, or idling? Need to
know in order to help.

Something knocking in a steering system on my 98 civic

Suspect worn outer cv joint. Check the boot for any tears, damage or leaking grease. If these are present your cv joint will fail soon if it hasn't already. If you put the car into reverse and turn the wheels to a hard lock a bad cv joint will make a popping grinding type sound. Try left and right turns when doing this test.

Have the shock tower check for the noise. The upper bearing to the strut may be bad

Engine idol knocking noise stalls while holding on footbrake

Hi portop,
Have the valve clearances checked, it could be tappits noise.....Has the vehicle ever been over heated? How's the power output from the engine, has it changed since you've had the vehicle? Does the sound disappear completely, or is the knocking sped up so it's faster and becomes hidden?

I think that it will be a good idea for you to have a technician listen to the engine, to make sure that you don't have a serious problem. Get two or three opinions
