Question about 2002 Hyundai Accent

1 Answer

I recently did a engine swap on a 2002 hyundai accent and the car runs fine. I forgot to put oil in the torque converter though, and the tranny does not engage. I lifted the front end off the ground checked levels and ran the car for about 1/2 hour continuously going through all of the gears. I do think the torque converter is full now because of the level drop but it still does not engage. On the torque converter itself it has two flat spots on the shaft, is that supposed to line up to the pump or is that there just to put a wrench on it. I didnt see anything inside thqt would lead me to believe that the flat spots are supposed to line up to anything. Any solutions please let me know. Thanks, Chris

You have added in a ton of fluid to fill it up right as just just a few quarts wont cut it!

Car sometimes wont start unless you spray starter fluid, just replaced filter. oem codes are p0734 and p1401

P0734 = 4th gear incorrect ratio (that's the torque converter 'lock-up' clutch - inside the converter).
P1401 = doesn't exist for 2002 Hyundai Accent's
P1401 exists for 2000 Accent = DM-TL Air Pump Motor Curent Draw is higher or lower than expected (normal is 17-36 mA). DM-TL = Diagnostic Module for Tank Leakage & is part of the Evaporative Emissions Control System.

These two DTC's are not associated/part of the Accent's Engine Managemenet System (EMS).
Best to have a qualified/certified Hyundai Service Technician properly diagnose this starting problem with your vehicle.

Loosing tranny oil between crankcase and bell housing. Would like to have some pictures showing the 2 seals that are associated with the torque converter and transmission. Maybe blown up and separate...

Assuming that it is tranny fluid, and not engine oil, there is only one seal, and your torque converter goes into it. Anyway, what you're in for is pulling the tranny, no matter what. Then it's pretty simple to pull the torque converter out, and change the seal. You want to make sure it's done right, though. That's an expensive transmission.

Flashing Engine Light

yes you have an engine misfire, probably a bad spark plug or plug wire, maybe a coil issue, do not continue to drive it or you will do severe damage to the catylitic converter

Engine oil change - Quantity

Its 3 1/2 Quarts, but you might as well put a full 4 quarts in if it goes through that much. make sure you change the filter aswell! dirty oil will not cause your engine to go through it any faster. Is the oil leaking or is the engine burning it?
