Can confirm there are hoses for the heater core from the engine? also do you just get air or nothing at all when you try to use it? did it ever blow hot air before? is there an ac/ on off option that might be on?

Try changing your thermostat. A bad thermostat will not let the fluid heat up. if its your controls your cables might be stuck so they won't operate. Maybe need new control . Maybe try a used auto wrecker to get used parts if you can't buy new.

How to change a ignition switch on a 1990 Z24 cavalier and a diagramof what to look for

Ignition Switch REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1982–91 Vehicles The switch is located on the steering column and is completely inaccessible without first lowering the steering column. The switch is actuated by a rod and rack assembly. A gear on the end of the lock cylinder engages the toothed upper end of the rod.
  1. Lower the steering column; be sure to properly support it.
  2. Put the switch in the OFF-UNLOCKED position. With the cylinder removed, the rod is in OFF-UNLOCKED position when it is in the next to the uppermost detent.
  3. Unfasten the two switch screws and remove the switch assembly. Fig. 1: Removal and installation of the ignition switch and related steering column components — 1990 vehicle shown 87958059.gif
Fig. 2: Exploded view of a steering column including the ignition switch — 1990 vehicle with standard column shown 87958060.gif
Fig. 3: Exploded view of the steering column including the ignition switch — 1990 vehicle with tilt column shown 87958061.gif
    To install:
  4. Before installing, move the new switch slider (standard columns with automatic transaxle) to the extreme left position. Move the switch slider (standard columns with manual transaxle) to the extreme left position. Move the slider (adjustable columns with automatic transaxle) to the extreme right position and then move the slider one detent to the left (off lock). Move the slider (adjustable columns with manual transaxle) to the extreme right position.
  5. Install the activating rod into the switch and assemble the switch on the column. Tighten the mounting screws. Use only the specified screws, since overlength screws could impair the collapsibility of the column.
  6. Reinstall the steering column.

2005 GMC Sierra 1500 - heater blows, but only cold air

Check coolant level. Check for heat at the heater hose going from water pump to heater core at firewall. Check to see that cable is moving coolant control valve from the closed to open position. Low mileage so it shouldn't be plugged heater core.

1996 oldsmobile ciera has hole in radiator that I patched with jb weld, did not keep hole closed, later car will drive fine, until it is sit at idle or at a complete stop, the car will run hot and cut off....

well if the leak is bad enough you should just replace the radiator. A cooling system relies on positive pressure to operate correctly. All that stuff they sell such as stop leak and bars, etc is just a temporary fix. If your coolant is not able to circulate through the motor completely you will have problems, warped head, blown gaskets, no heat also. I would just go to a scrap/junk yard and find a radiator. It will be pretty cheap since it is a 96 Olds.

GM Buick/Oldsmobile/Pontiac/Full-Size 1975-1990

CAUTION Do not attempt any service on the steering wheel, column or instrument panel on Buick and Oldsmobile models equipped with an air bag. Service on these models should only be performed by a professional technician.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  1. Turn the steering wheel so the vehicle's wheels are in the straight ahead position. Turn the key to the LOCK position.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the column to instrument panel trim plates and attaching nuts.
  4. Lower the column and disconnect the shift indicator cable.
  5. Disconnect the ignition and dimmer switch connectors.
  6. Remove the switch attaching screws and remove the switch.
To install:
  1. Move the actuator rod hole in the switch to the lock position.
  2. Install the switch with the rod in the hole. Adjust the switch as follows:
    1. Models to 1988- Move the switch slider to the extreme left ACC position, then move the slider 2 detents to the right to the OFF-UNLOCK position.
    2. 1989 and 1990 - Place a 3/32 in. drill bit in the hole on the switch to lock the switch into position. Move the switch slider to the extreme left position then move the slider 1 detent to the left LOCK position.

  3. Position and reassemble the steering column in reverse of the disassembly procedure.
I hope helped with this (remember rated this help) Good luck.

Heater control slider broken, need heat for winter

Try this: Go out to the vehicle, and open the hood. In the center of the engine compartment, mounted to the firewall, is the heater valve. You can't miss it, it has two hoses and a cable connected to it. If the slider on the dash is doing nothing, the cable may be off of the valve arm, slip it back on & retry it.... If the cable is not off, detach it from the arm, & move it in & out of the cable housing; the heat control on the dash should move. If it does not move, the cable is bad.
What you can do: Just move the arm that the cable connects to on the heater valve the other direction, to to allow the hot water pass thru the valve, and into the heater core.
You can run it like this all winter.
Hope this helps, and thanks for choosing FixYa.
Please feel free to post back if you have any questions regarding this solution.
