1. Check the oil (with dipstick) see if it smells the same as the oil spot you were detecting.

2. Fuel leaks are usually accompanied by a strong odor of fuel and time the vehicle is running.

I will guess that this car has quite a few miles on it. Having the gas ending up in the oil a bit is normal for high miles engines. As they get older they should be changed more often to keep this from happening.

As for the oil leak, only a visual inspection can determine the leak source. I would bet on a seal.

I just purchased a 1988 olds toronado. No manuel came with it. Do I drive in od or drive?

for driving you can use drive as its the same as driving a car before overdrive became available.most people drive with their cars in overdrive as it was designed for fuel economy and lower rpm`s while driving over a certain speed and it won`t hurt the motor.

I have a `91 Olds Toronado with a 3.8 and I'm getting a gas smell and the oil thins out after about 100 miles on a oil change . Where should I start looking?

Your fuel pump has a torn diaphram and is leaking fuel into the engine. Replace fuel pump.
  • To replace a mechanical fuel pump, remove the inlet and outlet lines at the pump.
  • Use a plug to stop the flow of fuel from the tank.
  • With the correct size socket wrench, remove mounting bolts. Then, remove the pump from the engine.
  • Clean the old gasket material from the engine block.
  • Apply gasket sealer to the mounting surface on the engine and to the threads of the mounting bolts.
  • Install the new gasket, then position the pump by tilting it either toward or away from the block to correctly place the lever against the cam.
  • If the pump is driven by a pushrod, the rod must be held up to permit the rocker arm to go under it.
  • When the pump is properly positioned, there should be an internal squeaking noise with each movement of the pump.
  • Tighten the mounting bolts firmly.
  • Attach the inlet and outlet lines, start the engine, and then check for leaks.

Where is the starter located on an 1988 oldsmobile toronado trofeo, im trying to locate it. I kind of know what it looks like but i just dont know where to find it at

Jack and secure the car Get under the car and with your legs pointing out of the front, look up at the gearbox. The starter motor will be at the base of the engine, a round tube about 5" across connected with a thick red wire. It is held in place with 18mm/3/4" bolts.
