Make sure you have 12 volts to the coil. If so may be bad coil or module.

What are the possible causes of the check engine light coming on and the engine vibrating heavily, even when it is idling and in gear? the car is a 2002 mitsubishi lancer CE sedan manual

the check engine lite lets you know that the computer senses a problem and saves it as a code in memory and still leaves a code even when the light resets itself so the scanner should be able to retrieve it ---go to an auto store most offer a free scan and have them give you the code ---the code will be your start point towards correcting your problem

Truck ran fine to work. when I came out it would not start. I tried using starting fluid but got nothing

I'm assuming this is a gasoline engine. If indeed you didn't have any results with the starting fluid then one would suspect that there is an ignition problem. Most Dodge gas engines of this vintage have individual coils for each spark plug. So...my guess is that you have a computer issue or a blown fuse. Are you getting a "check engine" light? If so, please retrieve the fault codes by turning the ignition on-off, on-off, on-off then on. The mileage display should provide one or more fault codes and then say "done". Write down the codes and relay them to me here. Also, check the under-hood fuse panel for any blown fuses and replace as needed.

Scan engine why it does not start

Good idea. Just hook up the scanner and turn the key to on.

As long as the ignition switch is receiving power and sending it out with the key in on-do the dash gauges and warning lights come on, and most importantly does the check engine light from the computer turn on? Then you know the computer is powered, so the scanner should work to retrieve any fault codes.
If no codes are present, and the key switch is working, check all fuses, then start checking for gas to the engine and spark at the spark plugs.

I would assume you never retrieved the codes
& googled them-- to find out the system with the
possible fault
We have had Check Lights for over 30 years,
nothing new there, just remember you have an
OBD1 System (1981 thru 1995) OBD2 (1996 thru 2014)
Put the codes you get into Google along with your vehicle
for the problems & solutions

Check engine lite, codes P0151, P0153, P1151, mechanic says incorrect voltage from PCM, replace PCM

CODE PO151 - HO2S - 21 BANK 2 SENSOR 1 CIRCUIT LOW INPUT. CODE PO153- HO2S BANK 2 SENSOR 1 CIRCUIT SLOW RESPONSE. CODE P1151 - LACK OF HO2S - 21 SWITCHING HO2S SIGNAL LOW INPUT. POSSIBLE CAUSES TO YOUR PROBLEM AIR INTAKE SYSTEM LEAKING VACUUM HOSES LEAKING OR DAMAGED.AIR LEAKS LOCATED AFTER THE MAF SENSOR MOUNTING LOCATION OR IN THE PCV SYSTEM. YOU COULD HAVE BASE MECHANICAL FAULT LIKE LOW CYLINDER COMPRESSION , VALVE TIMING OFF.HO2S CIRCUITS WET OR OILY CORRODED OR POOR TERMINAL CONTACT. HO2S SIGNAL CIRCUIT OPEN SHORTED TO GROUND SHORTED TO POWER OR THE SENSOR HAS FAILED. LOW FUEL PRESSURE OR VECHICLE DRIVEN UNTIL IT WAS OUT OF FUEL. BEFORE REPLACING PCM CHECK ALL VACUUM HOSES ON INTAKE MANIFOLD. REPLACE FUEL FILTER. CHECK YOUR SPARK PLUGS. IF SPARK PLUGS OIL COATED PROBLEM IN THE ENGINE ITSELF. YOU HAVE WORN PISTON RINGS, WORN VALVE GUIDES AND WORN VALVE SEALS. IF PCM WAS BAD YOU WOULD HAVE FLASHING CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAR WOULD RUN POORLY.YOU WILL HAVE FAULT PCM CODE IF PCM FAILED. YOUR PROBLEM IN HO2S SENSORS AND THE ENGINE AIR FUEL MIXTURE.
