It is a big job to replace the timing cover gasket everything between the engine and front bumper needs to be removed then the engine removed to do the job properly if everything goes well it's a 4 HR job if not 8hrs sounds about right
you could try an independent specialist mechanic for a second opinion

Replace piston rings on beetle

THis job requires a lot of ability and is not a job for beginners. It involves engine out, head off. removal of wear lip at top of cylinders. big ends off , pistons out. Checking ring gap of new rings, checking pistons, assembling rings without breaking them, REplacing pistons, big ends head and gasket. checking cam timing etc. As I said it is not a job for beginners and you will need a lot of expert guidance for the job

Having problem replacing intake manifold in 1997 lincoln towncar limo alternator in the way

If first time at this? Enlist expierienced help cause this is A big job. Big jobs pay good or cause big headaches. 4 eyes and 2 heads will complete job properly, rather than 1 frustrated head and 2 tired eyes that just dropped a nut down #2 intake port on head and didn't realize it. Ka-boom goes piston and watever else it destroys while your still cranking on key. First post said it all. Excellent advice, but remember is your pride worth a 3000$ engine repair bill?

you need to establish if its bottom end or top end. if bottom end big end bearings have gone then its a big job ( easier to replace engine ) and if its top end ( cam ) then its a mornings job. big difference. hope this helps

Bad water pump

Hello: To replace the water pump on the 4cylinder engine you will need a special tool to hold the water pump drive gear. If you don't hold the water pump drive gear the balance shafts will be out of time (rough running engine) the front cover will have to be removed, the timing chain removed. BIG JOB..... This information is for the 4 cylinder engine. If you have a V/6 it's not that big of job. For the 4 cylinder it would be best to let a professional who has the special tool, do the job.

Water pump on a 2002 dodge interpid i beleave has went out where is it located and how hard is it to change

If you dont know where it is,, how can you check it? depends what engine you have, if its a 2.7l its inside the engine and big bucks to replace. you also want to replace the timing chain and components while its apart. 3.5l engine , not a big job.

How do I adjust my timing for a 79 Pontiac Bonneville Brougham, and if my lifters are worn is this a job that I could do myself or something I may want the shop to handle

To set the timing, unplug the vacuum line to distributer and plug. Loosen the hold down bolt and with the light set timing at 12 degrees if it is a pontiac engine,if chevy engine set at 8 degree's,if buich engine 15 degree's,if olds engine set at 20 degree's.They used all these engines in pontiac product'a in 1979.To change lifter's it's a pretty big job,I talked to ya earlier about your veh., and usually if you replace lifter's due to wear the came should really be replaced due to wear and that's a pretty big job for most. If you really want to keep your veh. for a while that is the proper repair procedure. Most shop's probably won't do one without the other to warranty their work.

Smoke coming from engine

if it's white smoke....then get ready for a big engine repair bill or replacement of engine.....if it's another color then you'll probably need gaskets replaced or even possibly a ring job...either's expensive.....
