The purple wire comes from the neutral safety switch and goes to the starter. You should have 9to 12 volts here when you crank the motor. The big red wire will have battery voltage all the time. Not sure what problem your having but hope this helps.Good luck and let me know if you need more help.

The purple wire goes to the small terminal on the solenoid. It is marked with an S on the stud that it hooks up to.It is about a 10 gauge wire. The red one goes to the big stud on the starter. What you could do is go to the library and get a service manual that covers your vehicle.Try to get one that shows wiring diagrams.Good luck.

I have a 1996 Chevy Suburban 1500. No crank or any noise or sound when trying to start. Battery is good, even tried jumping to make sure. Could this be the starter? If so, where is it located?

The starter is next to the side of the lower engine block where the engine and trans meet(I believe on the passenger side on GM V8s)You should get 12 volts on the small(purple?) wire of the solenoid when the key is turned to "start".If you don't get 12 volts when the key is turned,it could be the switch on the shifter(usually referred to as the PRNDL switch)IF you get 12 volts at the solenoid when you turn the key, replace the starter(my Chevy work truck has gone through 6 starters(ONE A YEAR)since I've had it!)

I know this is a stupid question but where is the starter located on the 1996 Chevy suburban? I was told it was not hard to replace and I want to give it a shot but I cant find it. Help Please

If nothing else, follow the 'positive' battery cable, that's where it goes. If you have the V-8 it'll be on the passenger side, under the motor. Wiggle underneath, behind the front tire (after blocking the wheels, just because..) and look up inside the frame rail. Should be two vertical bolts that hold it in. It's usually easiest to unhook/rehook the wires on the solenoid when the starter is off the motor, you might have to set the starter on something to hold it up so that the wires aren't all tight when you try to deal with them.

If you take pictures with your phone as you go it can make it easier when you don't remember what goes where.

You may have to shim this starter. Search here for "shim GM starter" or "shim Chevy starter" and you'll find how it's done.

Does the 1995 Chevy Suburban have a solenoid and where is it located. thankyou

Yes it does, it is the small round canister bolted to the top of the starter. The starter is bolted to the bottom rear of the engine on the passenger side.

The starter solenoid is connected to the starter. You will have to remove the starter and the solenoid the housing that the wiring is connected to. Good luck
