A general rule of thumb is to start in the middle and work your way to the outside

for the 2.2l ohv: the long bolts (along the backside/intake side of engine) should be torqued to 63Nm (46ft/lb)
the shorter ones (4 bolts along the front/exhaust side and the stud at the end that's attached to the trans) need to be torqued to 58Nm (43ft/lb) with the pattern of:
(pully 8 4 1 5 9 <-- long bolts
side) 7 3 2 6 10 <-- short bolts / 10 is the stud

for the 2.4l dohc are as follows:
(pully 9 3 1 5 7
side) 10 6 2 4 8
bolts 1-8 torqued to 65Nm (40ft/lb)
bolts 9-10 torqued to 40Nm (30ft/lb)

then (either engine) give each an additional 90° (¼) turn

I forgot to mention that it's best to do the tightening in stages, you don't want to go completely tight on the first pass or there will problems and you'll get to do it all over again

I have a 1997 Chevy Cavalier and i'm tryin to torque the head down. I need to know the pattern sequence

The sequence is pretty much the same for ANY cylinder head. Start with the bolts in the center and work your way left, then right, then left, etc. toward the ends.

Engine torque specs for 1996 chevy cavalier 2.2l

For 1996 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2L SFI OHV 4cyl the check the next Head Bolt Torque sequence...

------------ front | 8 4 1 5 9 | of | | engine | 7 3 2 6 10 | ------------

Step 1: torque long bolts 8,4,1,5, & 9 to 46 Ft/Lbs torque short bolts 7,3,2,6, & 10 to 43 Ft/Lbs
Step 2: torque all bolts an additional 90 degrees Recheck final torque in sequence

*** CAUTION *** engine uses Torque To Yield head bolts (TTY) that permanently stretch during the initial installation. New head bolts must be used when cylinder head is replaced or re-installed to obtain proper torque.

Hope helps (remnember rated this).

Is just taking off the head and replacing the gasket all there is to replacing the head gasket?

Yes, however both mating surfaces need to be cleaned prior to reassembly. The cylinder head bolts will also need to be torqued to the manufacturers specifications.

I blew the head gasket on my 2002 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 L OHV. I am needing to know the torque specs so that I can have the gasket replaced tomorrow! A picture would be wonderful! Uncle is going to fix it but...

When torquing items today very little is done with just "numbers" in the process. Now you have to have an angle meter to complete the process so when you see me say to torque a specific number "plus so many degrees", this is how it's done. This is the meter:df03f54.gif Now, Here are the specs for installing the head:
Cylinder Head Bolt
  • First Pass
30 N·m
22 lb ft
  • Final Pass
155 degrees

Here is the sequence shown in picture form:
e8f4606.gif Also, you will need to discard the old bolts because they are "torque to yeild" bolts and CANNOT be reused. The reason: "Torque to yeild" bolts actually stretch during the torque process and once they've gone through this process they can't be reused because they no longer are able to "clamp" the head because they are too long. Hope this helps your repair project.
