Question about 2000 Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

My Golf Mk4 TDI's lights have started pulsing with the sound of the engine idling rough however rev counter stays pretty steady. putting a multimeter across the battery whilst ignition is off gives a reading of 12.4v and between 15.3v and 14.8v whilst idling with nothing else but ignition on. I also get a relay on drivers side dash giving me morse code quite often. Whilst running idle if i turn all toys on the engine struggles to stay idling. Whilst engine breaking the car feels funny and quite juddery. Can anybody shed some light? thanks in advnace

Voltage sounds kinda high for while its running. the voltage regulator in the alternator sounds like it is bad. i would replace the alternator.

Hi crossley 82
Check the engine coolant sensor. This sensor controls the fuel / air mixture, and was a common problem on that model.
Best of luck

Rev counter jumps whilst idling and then engine cuts out

Your problem sounds as if the thermo sensor....which controls the air fuel ratio when engine is cold....is faulty. It is a common fault on this model.
This is not an expensive part, and takes only a short time to fit.
Good luck
