SOURCE: HAVE A TROUBLESHOOTING MESSAGE PO446

DTC P0446 Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Vent System Performance

The vehicle control module (VCM) monitors the performance of the evaporative emission (EVAP) system by applying a predetermined level of vacuum to the EVAP system and monitors the vacuum decay rate. The VCM sets this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) if the vacuum decay rate is more than a predetermined value. The VCM monitors the amount of vacuum and the amount of pressure in the EVAP system by monitoring the fuel tank pressure sensor. For this DTC, the VCM turns ON both the EVAP purge valve and the EVAP vent valve when the Conditions for Running the DTC are met. This applies an engine vacuum to a closed EVAP system. The VCM turns OFF both the EVAP purge valve and the EVAP vent valve when the system reaches a correct amount of vacuum. The EVAP system should quickly RELEASE the vacuum in the EVAP system with the EVAP purge valve OFF and the EVAP vent valve OFF (open). This test indicates a blocked or restricted EVAP vent path if the EVAP system fails to release the vacuum quickly enough.

How do you change a canister purge solenoid?

This job is easy, the purge valve is located in the engine compartment, all you need to do is dissconnect two vacuum lines and an electrical connector then it slides off its bracket and off it comes, this takes about 10mins to replace, lets see if i can give you a picture of the valve and a diagram off its location.here are pictures, the valve is on the top rear area of the engine. hope this is helpful, good day.johnjohn2_134.jpgjohnjohn2_155.gif

2003 chevy cavalier p440 code

This indicates that a part of the EVAP control system is no longer fuctioning correctly. The EVAP system consists of alot of parts, including the gas cap, fuel lines, carbon canister, purge valve, and other hoses. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicles fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engin

heres some things you can try
Remove and reinstall

the gas cap, clear the code, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses
Inspect for damaged or disconnected hoses around the Evap purge solenoid
Check and/or replace the sensor
Check and/or replace the purge valve
Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks

Trouble Code: P1441 (2.2L L4 VIN F Auto)
EVAP System Flow During Non-Purge Print this code dataprint_icon_codes.gif
Number of Trips to Set Code: 2
OBD II Monitor Type: CCM Details
Indicators: MIL Details
Trouble Code Conditions:
DTC P0107, P0108, P0112, P0113, P0117, P0118, P0121-P0123, P0125, P0440, P0442, P0443, P0446, P0449, P0452, P0453, P1106, P1107, P1111, P1112, P1114, P1115, P1121 and P1122 not set, engine started, vehicle speed less than 75 mph, system voltage over 10.0v, ECT and IAT sensors from 39-86ºF and within 16ºF at startup, BARO sensor over 75 kPa, fuel level from 15-85%, PCM detected a continuous open purge flow condition with the fuel tank pressure decreasing to less than -11" H2O during the test. The PCM seals the EVAP system by commanding the EVAP Purge valve "off" and the EVAP Canister Vent valve "on". The PCM monitors the fuel tank pressure (FTP) sensor to detect if a vacuum is being drawn on the EVAP system. If vacuum in the EVAP system is more than a set value for a certain time, this code is set.

Possible Causes:
  • An improperly installed or damaged EVAP canister purge valve
  • A temporary blockage in the EVAP canister purge valve, purge pipe, or EVAP canister could cause an intermittent condition
  • FTP sensor is out-of-calibration, damaged or "skewed"
  • Purge solenoid valve is damaged or has failed
  • PCM has failed
  • TSB 02-06-04-046 contains a repair procedure for this code

2002 Cavalier error code 440 and 452 What do they mean?

This indicates that a part of the Evap control system  is no longer functioning correctly. The Evap system consists of many parts, including (but not limited to) the Gas Cap, fuel lines, carbon canister, purge valve, and other hoses. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a cars fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.
A code P0440 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
The gas cap is not installed or working properly
The purge solenoid has failed
The canister is plugged and not working properly
TRY this first: Remove and reinstall the gas cap or replace, clear the code, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
Inspect the Evap system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses
Inspect for damaged or disconnected hoses around the Evap purge solenoid
Check and/or replace the sensor
Check and/or replace the purge valve

P0452 Evaporative Emission Control System Pressure Sensor Low Input

Good luck and hope this helps. Recap star with the simple and replace the gas cap with a dealer OEM not a after market. If that does not fix it then change the sensor as indicated with the P0452 code. You can get the sensor from Auto Zone and they can give yo the step by step instruction to get the job done. Good luck and keep me posted.

Pulled a code and can't find out what it means

Code 27 and 28 refer to the quad driver circuits in the ecm. These control the grounds for various outputs.
Code 27 is for tcc, canister purge, and egr soleniods. Code 28 refers to fan relay, a/c compressor relay and cruise stepper motor. The canister purge, egr and compressor relay, brake switch and tcc solenoid are all fed by the erls fuse which is probably blown. Check the fuse if it is blown you will have to check these components for a short or a short or open in the wiring. If it is ok check for battery voltage on the pink wire on these solenoids.
