There is a gear set that has broken, these parts are available, howerer, you need to remove the upper dash panel to get the instrument cluster out. If you are interested, I can get the phone # of the guy who supplies them.

Hi
most likely the mechanism has failed at the back of the instrument panel, Its not digital is it? just normal type. also sometimes the speedo cable pull back slightly into the dash the speed will still show but if it is not tight up against the back panel then sometimes the miles will not turn. You will have to remove the clocks to be sure.

Regards

Dan

My speedometer works but my digital odometer does not work on my 2003 old alero

This is one guy's advice: Replace the speedo head, that should take care of the problem."

This site is also interesting because the guy said
General Motors cars had instrument cluster problems from 2003 through 2006. When I researched instrument cluster problems on the Internet what I found raised concerns in me. Many of those vehicles had problems that began with the instrument cluster, but eventually led to the engine refusing to start.
(an electronic instrument cluster, digital instrument panel or digital dash for short, is a set of instrumentation, including the speedometer, that is displayed with a digital readout rather than with the traditional analog gauges. Many refer to it simply as a digital speedometer.)

What would cause mileage reader not to work but speedometer does on my 1997 volvo ?

Hi Bob, I'm glad to help!

Bob that would depend on whether you have the "Electronic Cluster" or the Mechanical Cluster. If you have the Electrical Cluster then its a problem with circuit board inside the cluster. There are a row of 20 pins that the solder joints become weak and must be soldered to work properly. If its mechanical I'm not sure. On some older cars there use to be a cable that the gears went bad, but I'm not sure if your Volvo has a cable driven cluster. Hope this helps and have an awesome day Bob.

Speedometer, fuel gauge, not working

sounds like to me that your instrument cluster is bad this will cause the gages not to work, i had one just like it only my rpm and mileage didnt work i replaced the cluster and thats all it took. You can get one at a junkyard for around 50 dollars and that should hopefully fix your problem.

I HAVE A 1994 GEO PRISM 1.6L THE SPEEDOMETER DOESNT WORK , I REPLACED THE CLUSTER AND THE SENSOR THE SPEEDOMETER REACHES 35MPH AND THATS IT ANY SUGGESTIONS.

I've had a similar problem with my '94 prizm. I had to replace the instrument cluster about seven or eight years ago because the speedometer quit working. After replacing with a used instrument cluster it's been working fine till now. However, the problem is back again....so I'm looking for another used one. There is definately a weakness in this speedometer design when the mileage on the car gets high. Your problem is different since you replaced both the sensor and the speedometer and it still doesn't work. Chances are, you got a speedometer that didn't work to begin with. I would try another used one.
