Hello. Yes that is exactly what you need to do. Once the screws are out you can pull the handle assembly out just enough to disconnect it from the latch release rods. Not too far, you don't want to bend the rods. Those little connectors you see just unsnap from the rods, then they swing away so you can pull the rod out of where it connects to the handle mechanism. Have a piece of wire handy to hook the rod so it doesn't fall out of reach, but even if it does it won't go far. I'm enclosing a picture of a typical "swing away" connector so you can see how it unsnaps from the rod. I think yours will be green and blue, so remember which is which, one goes on the right and one on the leftbroken handle on tailgate - 84cc4fe.jpg

How to get the tailgate unstuck

If you can't do it with the handle, then remove the screws holding the square cover on the middle inside of the tail gate and open, could be broken on the inside, must open to see. I have a 85 nissan 720 and had to fix mine before,my handle on the inside broke and I replaced it,think it was about 11 bucks, autozone has the part, may need a pair of plyers to pull rod to release it to lower tail gate.

You can try taking the handle out and fishing the rods up to the opening. Other than that, its a tough job.

My rear tail gate latch is locked open. How do I unlock this latch so I can close my tail gate

more likely than not the latch has closed some how if you have some one hold the the handle to open the tailgate you can open the latch by hand with a screw driver if your not sure what it should look like look at another door latch in the open position very simple to do and you cant hurt anything doing it this way

Annoying, but easy to fix: Actuate the opening handle and manually rotate the latch to the open position.

The tailgate latch, doesn,t latch

you have to make sure the strikers are lined up to the latch. The latches get dirt in them and dont move easily. You may have to remove the latches and clean them and grease them up make sure the action is working. There is a spring on the latch if it is broken you will have to replace the latch. Make sure as you before you shut the tailgate the the latches on the tailgate are open and not latched closed. You can put a screw driver in the latch and pull the handle and that should release the latch in the position ready to accept the striker when you close it Next make sure the plastic clip retainers are not broken on the handle

Tailgate jamed shut

under the carpet installed on the tailgate door, there is a hole. put a screw driver in it and manually flip the latch open, to start.
yjen take the door panel off, one screw with the interiro handle, and pull the rest off,
watch the auto release slidw side to side, you will find a broken piece here, I made an extension piece with a plastic hook and screw, works fine for over a year, lube all latch parts with wd 30 once opened.

Cannot open my tailgate

Check your local auto parts junk yard and locate a similar truck that was wrecked on its side or front and get the parts off of that vehicle taking notes on how it is installed. That might be cheaper than a body shop.

Cannot open my tailgate

I am sure you have found your solution by now... but just in case: My wife did the same thing.. you can reach in on the right side and push down on the rod to open. There are aftermarket handles available on ebay and other sources for around $35. I am currently searching install instructions as I just got mine in today.

2003 Ford Explorer back door latch will not open

Mine just did the exact same thing. The latch may be moving freely because it is not hooked to the latching mechanism anymore. In my case, the handle had broken where the handle hooks to the rod that operates the mechanism. Go to the Ford dealer and buy a new handle. Here in S.C. it was $24. You can't get this at the parts houses. Start by removing the plastic "Ford" cover that is over the liscense plate lights. You then have to remove the aluminum rivets that hold the handle to the tailgate from the outside and remove the broken latch. Remove the pull handle loop on the interior side of the tailgate (2 screws), unsnap the inside plastic tailgate interior panel, and pull down the black plastic sheeting that is underneath the panel to make access to the mechanism inside of the tailgate. There is also a hard plastic cover that you will see that needs to be pulled loose to open another access hole. Install the new tailgate latch handle by sliding back into the mounting holes and attach with two 10-32 screws and nuts. The new handle will come with a new yellow rod attachment piece on the handle. You will see inside of the tailgate a small rod hanging down, most likeky it will have the same rod attachment piece as the one on the new handle. Note the position of the yellow piece on the rod, as you will connect the new piece in the same place. Once the rod is hooked up, relubricate the metal mechanism with a light machine oil, replace the black plastic cover, replace the black plastic sheeting, (secure with a small amount of duct tape), replace the tailgate interior panel, replace the pull handle loop, shut tailgate, replace "Ford" cover over lights, and you're done!
