maybe a freak occurence, a one off. Possibly the tailgate was not shut properly and just released. I WOULD ENSURE THAT, ON THIS OCCASSION, I keep in mind that it must always be shut firmly and should it happen again, then I WOULD START WORRYING.
There are some mischievous individuals who can , as you press the lock/unlock button of your remote keyfob, intercept and store the code it is transmitting.

Your tailgate switch is bad or not adjusted properly.

The struts on the hatch is worn. Replace both of them.

check for proper operation of the tailgate sensor is any where around the tailgate
the tailgate should close all the way if not the message will be there even you change the sensor

Tailgate/trunk latch will not engage so the tailgate just bounces won't close - is there something I can do to fix this on my own?

test the switch appears to be working doesnt mean its working and or properly aligned

the most common problem is you havn,t shut the tailgate properlly.you may have it on just the first latch in wich case the rear wiper wont work.give the tailgate a good slam to make sure its shut.
