Question about 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

My 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the 5.9 litre with an automatic has no reverse. It will however drive in forward gears. The transmission seems to try to move in reverse, but acts as though it doesn't have enough torque to move in reverse, it acts as though it is slipping. I pulled the transmission pan expecting to find burnt fluid and debris in the pan, but the fluide is bright red and clear with no debris or anything in the pan. I have a Chiltons manual that is worthless in helping diagnose this problem. What other probable causes may be responsible for this? Where can I get better info for diagnosis? Can you recommend what electronic devices may be responsible or common failures of this sort?

This trans did have numerous problems with the weld breaking on the reaction shell it happens all of a sudden that it doesn't leave much if any debris behind.I have been rebuilding transmissions for 30 years and I have seen anyrev problems caused by any electrical problems only thing electrical would be shift solenoids that I know of.Maybe replace trans or take it to a trans shop and have it pulled apart.GOOD LUCK

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee makes a lot of noise when selecting Reverse. Forward gear okay. Now, reverse doesn't work and it sounds like the transmission is coming apart.

Your automatic transmission has an internal low and indirect clutch. The indirect clutch is what's used when your vehicle is in reverse. You might have a heavy jerking when you put it into gear that feels like vehicle got hit by another or loud rattling or chattering in gears. It very well may be coming apart as you think and soon, so I'd recommend taking it to your local transmission shop to inspect and test it and they can give you a more detailed idea of what it would take to fix it. good luck

1st gear issues on my '96 Grand Cherokee Limited.

rip the gearbox out and fit a manual ,or scrap the truck because the cost of repair is greater than the resale value of this vehicle ,its worth a 1000euros if you get the right person ,4litre engine petrol ,road tax is astronomical and at 7 dollars for a gallon for fuel you can see where these gas guzzlers end up

Jeep was doing ok ,as i came up our mountian i felt two or three small jerks, when i was close to the top it just would not go forward anymore,i tried every gear drive 1st,2nd and reverse,I also tried...

it sounds like your automatic transmission quit his job. How much miles are on the clock? If more than 150.000 and you pulled trailers, climb mountains etc. this will be the first choice. Let the engine idle, push the brakes and check if the car will go in any gear. If this will happen only in reverse gear, your auto trans need to be replaces. You can use a rebuilt auto trans.

HI, It may seem obvious, but sometimes overlooked.... have you checked the oil level, as low oil can cause some strange things to happen! My 96 4 liter would be reluctant to move sometimes, but after I topped it up, it has been fine.

Transmission problems

Go straight to your local transmission repair centre, they will be able to diagnose the fault and repair it for you. Also check your transmission oil, Engine running at normal working temp, in park (P) remove dipstick, on your left at the back towards the bulkhead. check level if low top up only half a litre at a time. if low put in half a litre of the correct fluid(available at your jeep dealer) put foot on the brake and put into reverse (R) then put into drive (D) put back into P and recheck if still low add another half litre and repeat process. When level is correct test drive, if all is ok, take to transmission shop to find the leak. repair and all will be well. Hope this helps.

1998 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LIMITED TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS

Check the condition of the tranny oil on the dipstick. If it's black and smelly, the tranny clutches might be worn out. Make sure you have enough fluid in there first. Check the fluid with the car engine running and the tranny in park. The level should be between the 2 marks.
