Question about 2002 Ford F350 Super Duty DRW Reg. Cab

2 Answers

I have a 2002 ford f350 7.3 diesel p/u. I have replaced 3 starters in three weeks. 50% of the time when I turn the ignition to on, the starter begins to crank. Also, starter will reengage while driving. Last, just noticed when I put in reverse...starter began to crank. Any Ideas? Thanks, Bob

You've got a short! Check the accessory wire. the small wire that attatches to the starter along with the 2 larger wires. Make sure it is 1) on the right terminal 2) tight as so not to move and hit any other wire or ground. If not that you have a melted/shorted wire, probably over amped and melted, somewhere between starter and ignition, or accessory wires. Does it engage when you have radio, wipers, or heat on? And not when everything is turned off?

It almost sounds like something may be wrong with your Ignition switch. Other things to check would be wires going down to starter, wires at starter cellenoid on fire wall.

My 1995 ford f-150 makes a clackeing noise when i try to start i have replaced the starter and it worked for two weeks and replaced the positve wireing what could it be

You may be having problems with the Starter Relay. There is a small wire on the Relay which runs back to the Ignition switch. If you put a testlight on the end of this wire and turn the Ignition key to START, there should be a steady current going to this small wire. If the testlight cuts out, the Ignition switch is bad. If the testlight works every time, then most likely the Starter relay is bad.

Or you can just change the Starter Relay and forget testing the small wire. You might want to go to Autozone, Oreillys or Advance for a starter Draw test of the new starter after you replace the Relay. Then have them do a test for the Battery to see if it is shorting under a load.

I hope you find my solution very helpful.

i would have the starter tested you may be drawing to much amperage at the starter frying the fuses and relay, have a starter draw test to see how much of a draw it pulls when starting the truck.

Try removing the starter and putting a small amount of grease on the bendix gear drive. That is the part you can see in the nose, with the gear. Not on the gear, grease the spiral shaft.

The starters on the Diesels are pretty heavy duty so unless the bolts or a wire is coming loose I would rule out "going bad already" Other issue would be if you put in a used one 3 weeks ago.
Take note how the ignition feels when you turn the key, if you wiggle it and turn it slowly just right does it help ? The contacts in the back of the switch may be wearing out.
I hope this helps

Your starter contacts are bad. You have 2 options: Replace the starter assembly, or remove the starter & replace the internal solenoid contacts & the solenoid plunger. This is a common problem with Toyota starters; I replace contacts 3-4 times a week.
