Brief grinding noise after cranking

I have a 2009 Accord 4 cyl with 13,000 miles. On cold mornings it makes a strange grinding noise immediately after it cranks. It's brief, not even a few seconds and doesn't do it all the time, but the colder the morning the more likely it will make the noise.

Sounds like you are using an oil with too high viscosity. or your oil pump is bad. I lived up north and my car took 10w 40, had to run 5w 40 in the winter. The first # is the viscosity of the oil cold, and the second number is the viscosity of the oil when hot. The the lower the first number, the quicker it will flow through the oil pump and to your motor. Call Honda and check with them.

Don't worry about that it normal the ECU is program like that when it too cold ,the engine need a rich mixture of fuel that why you hear that noise, when it is already started then you don't hear it anymore, hope that clear your mind.

The 10-30 oil should not cause a problem. You might want to get an experienced mechanic to check the noise to make sure it is nothing bad. In the meantime always give your van regular oil changes. That is the best thing you can do to maintain your vehicle.

When is really cold, and vehicles with non electrical power steering start for the first time after a good period of inactivity the power steering pump tents to wine, that is normal, some other cars or almost all the cars when they pass 100.000 miles develop a little metallic noise that goes away when the oil pump distributes and lubricates all moving parts inside the engine when the car starts first thing in the morning in a really cold morning.

the rod you mentioned is called linkage, yes it's posible, snow may have jammed up under the car and is stopping it from properly engageing, or the grinding could be internal in the transmition, jack the car up, put jack stands under the frame, block the tiers, and take a real good look at were the linckage conects to the tranny, good luck

quite possibly it may be taking a little while to build fuel pressure. next time try cycling the key on and off 3 or 4 times with out cranking the vehicle to allow the pump to build pressure the try to star it up if it starts right up then your problem is it's just taking time to build pressure
