Question about 1994 Jeep Cherokee Country

1 Answer

When attempting to switch from 2-wheel drive to 4-wheel drive on my 94 Jeep, there was an alarming rhythmic clunking sound, so I was forced to switch right back. What could this be?

Your transfer case could be bad, or your front lock hubs need to be locked. Did you switch over while moving or were you static? If switched while moving, you definitely damaged the t/c.

2 wheel high is rear wheel drive only. next one back is 4 wheel high.
Only position i wouldn't worry about is 4 low ...they usually get weird because it's used very rarely (NEARLY NEVER). There is no dipstick on a stick transmission you need to remove a plug on the drivers side of the unit to check that. The clunk and looseness is of concern as it could be a bad universal joint on any one of the driveshafts or axle shafts, or it could indicate a problem in either of the differentials. Joints aren't terrible
to repair but a differential is a lot of work and depending on what you are paying, it could be a deal breaker.

Clunking in rear end of 1997 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L

chances are it's either in the transfer case or differential. Since it's easy to remove the rear cover on the differential, I' d look there first. If you remove the driveshaft and get both rear wheels off the ground you can turn the assembly and inspect the gears. If it's not in the gears, then you know where to look....And, check those u joints too!

Sounds like a broken tie rod end or ball joint. Either way, the car's unsafe to drive in this condition. have it checked out right away.

Rhythmic thud that increases and decreases with speed. I replaced wheell bearings and seals the differential looks ok, real clean. should the axle have any play up and down?

On a 1996 GMC Jimmy 4 wheel drive
Why is it reluctant to coming out of 4 wheel drive? Switch must be working when activated, you can hear it clicking but it won't release into 2 wheel drive, even when backing up and turning the wheels!
