Mk4 Gold Gti underperforming and overfueling

My Mk4 Gti recently had a engine swap, with a new motor, its all good..eventualy the next thing to go was my battery, after replacing it the car was flying faster than chuck noriis's punches, after a week or its started degrading steadily, as if there is not enough air pressure running through the system, thats probalby the wrong way to discribe it but the bottem line is its performing at like a fraction of what it did after the bat was replaced, ive noted frequent backfiring, (it bacfired when it was running fine, but not as prominent) and also when i change gears and step onthe gass there is a delay, overfeuling and feels like the turbo only kicks in after 3000 revs/m, where i think it should kick in at 2000rpm. it has a dumpvalve on it, we've retraed the vacume source to another point whihc has improved the dumping, but it soounds pissy, not pressured..anyway, hope this clarifies.

    Thanks for the response, firstly, that is what i assumed happened after we replaced the battery, they ECU was reset, which yippy was great, but like i said it degraded, so i have detached the bat a couple of times leaving it 30 min to an hour, no change. so im not to sure. like mentioned the DV is rerouted to a vacuum valve right from the oil stick, below that small protective cover coming front the factory DV.

    this improved the dumpig as before we changed it it hardly made a whistle...

    so i am assuming there is lack of air, whihc obviously leads to over fueling, the questions is what is causing that,

    some have said its chipped and i need to remove it, whihc i think is bollocks

Have the computer scanned. If you have a service engine or emissions light on then a service code has been stored in the computer and only a scan will tell you what the problem is.

well on the mk3 like mine its right under next the front mount of the engine,below the distruibutor,both mk3 and 4 8v's are the same motors just a different style of intake. good luck

one most cars, if you look at the engine from where the belts are (that is consindered the front of the engine for your purpose) the #1 cylinder is to the right and next to you.

Will a 1982 quantum motor fit into a 1985 GTI


If the Quantum engine is the 1.7l (4 cylinder) engine, it should fit. The main difference will be that the engine in the Quantum is mounted "front-to-back" while the GTI will have the motor mounted "side-to-side". All of the accessories, the intake system, exhaust system and other items will have to be retained from the GTI motor.
Personally, I would think that this would be a lot more work and have a much greater chance for issues than a more simple swap with a standard VW engine.

HOW CAN I DIAGNOSE FOR FAULT OF OVERHEATING GOLF GTI MK4 YEAR2000. I HAVE CHANGED THERMOSTAT. IT COULD BE ENGINE GASKET OR WATER PUMP. HEATING IN CAR NOT WORKING AFTER THERMOSTAT CHANGE.


Have a Cooling System pressure test done. Any good shop can do it for you. It can be alot of things and instead of throwing parts at it, have the system pressure tested. That will identify your problem.

yes, no problem.....use the whole transmision/electrics/computer systems,you may also need to use the suspension/brakes.for ride and stopping power, but thats optional.....

it might be the e break sensor . ive heard of them causing shut downs . also check all fluid levels if your coolant is too low the sensor will shut it down lol. and i think theres a break light recall that might have something to do with it . take it in to vw if you have the means for a scan . of find someone in your area with a vag com . it can read the error codes from the computer . good luck

ive bought a cat back scorpion exhaust for my mk4 2.0 golf gti the problem is its banging off the bottom off the car witch is doing my nut in i bought a 4motion rear valance for the cut out for the tail pipe witch was a waist of time as the exhaust is no where near the cut out as it will not go any higher because its already hitting the body does any one else have this problem your advice on this would be helpfull thanks
