Newer cars are all computer controlled you can purchase 'race' modules but you do not say why you want to alter the air/furl mixture.

Why does engine run rich at times under acceleration?

not enough detail
to get an engine to accelerate , the air /fuel mixture is moved to rich in accordance with engine rpms
the more rpms the richer until the peak rpms are reached
( accelerator pump-power valve in carbies and ECM settings according to accelerator position
black exhaust smoke in diesels
so if you press the accelerator slowly then the air/fuel mixture is altered constantly in relation to the pedal setting
If you floor the pedal then it moves to rich and you get black exhaust smoke until the air mixture is again in balance

What are the probable causes of DTC P1283?

code p1283 refers to heated oxygen sensor(HO2S) bank 2--lean mixture ===causes ---HO2S---fuel pressure --injectors---intake air leak
the HO2S sensor is the one immediately in the exhaust manifold or before the cat converter ---you have changed the wrong unit and that is why there has been no change ( on a v 6 bank 2 is the bank at the grill side )
both the HO2S and the O2 sensor report on the air /fuel mixture to the ECM which makes the changes so it would be true to say that .
check all vacuum hoses for cracks or loose and check the vent controls hoses as well as any leak there will alter the mixture ratio and make it difficult for the ECM to maintain correct air/fuel ratio

possible but unlikely. Your problems are an indication of vacuum leaks or air leaks that are causing an uncontrolled alteration to the air/fuel mixture. Run the fault codes as it may be EGR system, EVAP system or leaking hoses for the vent controls -auto transmission controls. May be even a leaking brake booster.

MAP = mass air pressure, Baro is atmospheric air pressure ( as in barometer), VAF = volume air flow and MAF = mass air flow . The baro sensor alters the air fuel mixture for varying altitudes that the vehicle can travel through. IE from flat plains at sea level to over the rockis.. The VAF sensor measures the volume of air passing through the air intake . The MAF measures the combination of volume and the density of the air flowing through the air intake to adjust the air fuel mixture as cold air is more dense and requires more fuel to burn completely. The MAP measures the vacuum in the manifold after the throttle control to adjust the air fuel mixture in over run situations so that the car will not backfire. All these sensors continually supply input to the ECM which continually compares them with the O sensors and adjusts the injector pulse to ensure complete burn of the mixture in all situations and engine rpm's.

The carburetor is not tuned right and the engine keeps detonating...i've tried adjusting the idle screw and the fuel mix screw but nothing works..what else might the problem be??

there are two things that can cause detonation, one is ignition timing too far advanced, the other is a lean fuel mixture, if you haven't altered the timing it has to be the fuel mixture, if it has just started doing this for no reason it could be a blocked fuel filter or fuel line or a blockage in the carby......hope this helps.....cheers.

No this should not have happened again so soon, the catalytic convertor is sensitive to rich fuel mixtures. In the event of an overly rich mixture the catalyst will overheat and melt. I would have the vehicle checked by a good diagnostician, paying attention to the air flow meter, coolant temperature sensor, throttle position sensor and oxygen sensors. All of these have the ability to alter the fuel mixture.

I have a 2000 vw beetle 2.0 wich is very hard on fuel you can smell it running rich

You need to have it scanned so you know which of the fuel mixture altering components malfunctioned.

Yes, you will need to repair the wiring & correct the situation to provide the engine control computer with the proper signal to know how much fuel to release into the engine through the EFI system.

Unfortunately, too many times these wires are altered by way of resistors or just unplugging them in an effort to get more power & that results in more fuel coming through the exhaust. You are need to check the catalytic converter to see if its functioning, (with raw fuel fumes coming through it may be gone/removed/gutted) normally with the fuel system & exhaust correct, you shouldn't smell fuel coming out of the tailpipe. good luck

Your car doesn't have a choke. Fuel injected engines alter the mixture using information from the sensors to give the right mixture all the time, thus negating the need for a choke. This is only for carbureted engines, and your car is not. If it's idling fast, you can change the settings on your idle set screw, or have it tuned.

Tempreture gauge drops to cold and car stops

Sounds like faulty engine temp sensor. When it drops to cold, the engine control unit picks this up and alters the fuel mixture accordingly. The ECU will be making it a very rich fuel mixture for cold starting, hence very poor running when engine is hot.
