This problem is caused by a defective fuel gauge sending unit, the sending unit is part of the fuel pump modual ( sender and fuel pump assembly) and is located inside the gas tank, the tank must be removed to replace it.

1998 chevrolet astro van/fuel gauge always stays on full

Usually a sign of a faulty sending unit in the tank.
A mechanic would ground the wire to the sender to see if the gauge moves.

Fuel gauge not working

Sounds like the float is stuck, or corroded. Look to see if you have an access door above the fuel tank. If so you should be able to take out the fuel sender, unstick the float, or clean the sensor, and replace it

My fuel gauge floats from full to empty when I stop at a light! And its stays on empty until I drive for about five minute why is that? I can't get an accurate fuel reading!!

I have the same vehicle and my car actually was full of gas, registered empty & left me on the side of the road..It was the sensor in the fuel line that had to be replaced.

I have a 2003 GMC Envoy and my gas gauge has been flowing up and down to empty and full recently it has stayed on empty. How do I fix it?

Ensure that all of the wire connections are clean, secure and corrosion-free.

  • 2 Check your fuel gauge fuse if the gauge's indicator stays on empty when your turn on the ignition. If the fuse is good, join the sending unit connector to ground. Replace the sending unit if the gauge indictor moves to the full line.
  • 3 Ground the terminal located on the back of the fuel gauge with a jumper wire if the indicator doesn't move. If it does move, consider replacing the wire between the fuel gauge and the sending unit. A poor ground is frequently responsible for fuel gauge problems.
  • 4 Release the wire that connects to the fuel tank's sending unit. Confirm that there's no worn insulation that would permit wire contact to the body or frame. A fuel gauge reading of full generally indicates a problem with the tank unit, not the wiring.

Gas gauge goes past full when you turn on

Could be a short to ground on the positive wire leading from the fuel sender.

Ford thunderbird fuel gauge stays on full

More than likely it is the sending unit inside the fuel tank. You will need to remove the fuel tank and take the sending unit out of the tank and replace it.
