Question about 1983 Ford Crown Victoria

Wont start when it rains

Starts and runs beautifully in dry weather, but when it rains or heavy fog or dew, general dampness... it will crank over and over but not start. Like no fire getting to the engine.

Hi, sounds like your electrical system is grounding out when it gets damp/wet.

1. an '83 'should' have a roto-cap. find a spark plug and follow the wires back. they should all go back to one central location. a round or rectangular device with one wire in the center.
2. find the metal clips holding this on. pull them off or unscrew the screws holding it on.
3. once its open, look for moisture.
4. dry the area as best you can.
5. look for a rubber seal that should keep water/moisture from entering. You can use some sealant to assist with this.

the other thing this could be, is a crack in your wires, or distributor/rotor cap. now you are looking at replacing the wires and cap.

To do this RIGHT. I would replace all the spark plug wires and the rotor-cap. (if you have not done this lately). This will more than likely fix your problem.

If you do this yourself, some of the spark plugs may be hard to reach and you may need to remove a tire to get to them.

1. replace the distributor/Rotor cap first. Then
2. replace ONE spark plug wire at a time.

After you do all this, you 'should' be all set.

Why won't my car start? It was running last night.

Try start the car again when it is completely dry, if it starts the rain may be short circuiting something on the loom in the engine bay.

If it still wont start,

will it turn over? (car tries to start)
- If it wont turn over the battery would be dead

- If it turns over but wont burst into life then we can go from there ^_^

1999 Chevy astro van won't start

Had the same issue with our 1999 chevy astro van, would crank but would not start. It had been raining and windshield had a leak, after 2 days of no rain it started. Pulled codes and was the Security system in the ignition switch. Hope this helps.

I have a 1995 chev caprice 4.3 ltr when it rains or damp out car wont start where should i look

The first place I would check would be the ignition coil. These are pretty bad for "arcing" in wet weather. Take a spray bottle full of water and spray the ignition coil with the engine running. If the coil is bad, you will probably see sparks at the coil and possibly the engine will die. If the coil is good, it should be able to take all of the water you can give it with a spray bottle.

Also, if this does not produce results, also spray the distributor cap and wires and look for the same thing.

1994 Volvo 940, 4-cylinder non-turbo. Car starts fine when weather is dry. However, we have had recent cold/snow/rain and it is very damp. Car has full gas tank and good battery and will continue to crank...

I suggest that you look for secondary voltage leaks from the ignition system. Moisture causes dirt to become a pathway for this spark voltage. Look inside all wire connections, for any corrosion. A scope can test this, but typically a home does not have a scope...

Starting in damp weather 1993 240 wagon, auto/od, 235k miles

perhaps you need a new cap and roter a new spark plug wire set. they don;t like moisture. also check to see if you have any broken or leaking vacuum hoses. the worse case senerio would be that your head gasket is leaking--at cold temps a little antifreeze will enter until everything warms up and it seals shut due to metal expanding. but since you say it's cold weather only--this probably wou;dn't be the case. good luck.

!997 Jetta doesnt start when it is early inthe morning w/ dew on the Ground or rainy day.

I had the same problem with miosture and my 96 Jetta GLS dying, and I finally figured out it was the ignition coil. Spray the coil with water lightly while it is running, and it'll probably kill the car. They you'll know!
