Try replacing the rotor, distributor cap. If nothing, then distributor is bad.

How do I know the differences between coil & distributer

Isabella,
You need to be more specific with what type of vehicle you have... makes a big difference.

A coil has only one wire (spark plug sized wire) coming out of it, and this goes into the center of the distributer.
The distributor has a wire going to each cylinder's spark plug.

Diagram or picture of where the spark plug wires go into the distributer on a engine number 318-1

For this you have to determine when the #1 cylinder is at TDC (Top Dead Center) - when it would be firing. Take the distributor cap off and look at the rotor - it would be pointing at the #1 spark plug wire on the distributor. The wires would be connected it order around the distributor cap starting at 1. The sequence is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 in a clockwise fashion.

Replacing distributer suburban 1500 m 1997

HOPE YOU DIDN\'T TAKE OUT THE OLD ONE YET !!!!!!!!!! YOU MIGHT WANT READ UP ON THIS BEFORE YOU DO. BUT THERE ARE PROCEDURES, DISTRIBUTOR MUST BE MARKED, @ BASE/ENGINE BLOCK, USE PAINT, ROTOR MUST BE FACING #1 SPARK PLUG, #1 PISTON NEEDS TO BE SET @ TOP-DEAD-CENTER, ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE, NOT EXHAUST STROKE, IF YOU REMOVE THE VALVE COVER DRIVERSIDE IF V8, YOU CAN SEE #1 ROCKER ARMS. WHEN ROTATING THE ENGINE, MANUALLY W/WRENCH, BFW, BIG-FU-KIN-WRENCH, BOTH ROCKER ARMS WILL BE EVEN & LOOSE, IF YOU REMOVE #1 SPARK PLUG, THE TOP OF THE PISTON WILL BE @ TOP OF ITS STROKE, ALSO, TIMING MARKS WILL BE INLINE @ CRANKSHAFT DAMPER. @ 0, TOP DEAD CENTER. WHEN THIS OCCURS, YOUR @ TOP DEAD CENTER . DO YOU UNDERSTAND ???????? BY REMOVING ALL SPARK PLUGS IT WILL BE EASYIER TO TURN THE CRANK. ONCE YOU ACHIEVE & SATISFY ALL THE ABOVE PROCEDURES YOU CAN SET IN YOUR DISTRIBUTOR, ROTOR FACING #1 SPARK PLUG TERMINAL, THAT YOU ALSO MARKED, INSERT THE NEW DISTRIBUTOR EXACTLY LIKE YOU TOOK IT OUT, REPEAT, EXACTLY..........................GOOD LUCK!!!

Car keeps cutting off just got a new starter, battery, and alternator

check the battery connections really good and check the power distribution center really good, sometimes the wires will get corroded and cause that too happen,it sounds like you just have a bad connection either to the distribution center or on one of the cables, that will cause what its doing,i own one of those and they will do this sometimes, good luck.

Engine turns over but no fire to the spark plugs

Check for cracks or white dust on the spark plug wires. If found replace the spark plug wires.
If the spark plug wires are fine, replace the cap and rotor.

If it still is not fixed check to see if the engine is throwing a code and post more info.
Do all the spark plugs not fire? check engine light on? Did anything happen right before that might have caused this? ex: washed the engine?

Where is distributor located1995 960 6cyl

hi, if you follow the leads that come from the top of the spark plugs where all these leads plug into is the distributer their will be four leads running along the outside going to each spark plug then the lead that goes into the center of the distributer goes to the coil.

So if you follow the four ht leads from the spark plugs what these all plug into is the distributer, if you are removing the distributer then make sure you mark where each lead goes as you need to put them all back in the right place.
Its best if you mark say the first lead with a 1 and then write a one onto the distributer where that lead goes into use permanent marker pen to do this so it dont rub off. getting the leads the wrong way round will mean the car will either miss fire or not run at all so just keep it all marked up properly.

Let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok
