What cause the engine in a 1988 corvette to shut off. It runs good for a while and then the engine shuts off. I changed the plugs, and added injector cleaner. It will run as long as I push the gas peddle.

I would suggest you test the fuel pressure while the engine is warm to verify its not losing fuel pressure. You may also want to replace the ignition control module which is mounted underneath the distributor cap.

The problem can be related to a faulty fuel pump which can not enough pressurize the fuel rail ( must be approx 34-37 PSİ while idling , put a fuel pressure test gauge to the shraver valve and take note of the pressure )

The problem can be related to faulty iddle air control valve ( IACV )

If the engine runs with gas peddle pushed, IACV can be faulty. In iddle ( gas peddle not pushed ) , the air flow is controlled by ECM via Iddle air control valve.

Check also the TPS which must be 0,54 V on iddle position and if the IACV is disabled , the engine ust runs at 450 RPM on Neutral.

Check serive manual to disable the IACV to make the best iddle throttle body adjustment.

I have a 2004 gmc envoy with a 4.2 motor....it has a slight vibration while at idle but my main concern is why my entire motor and vehicle shakes violenty when i shut the vehicle off.

I think what you might have is called dieseling on shut off. Newer engines run much hotter than older vehicles and require a fuel shut off solenoid close to the engine. If this solenoid goes bad, on vehicle shut off, excess fuel is still being fed to the engine. Even though there is no spark because the key is off, the engine is hot enough to ignite the fuel causing the shake and shudder. I'm not 100% sure of this but thats what it sounds like. If the solenoid is working properly and shuts off the fuel line like it should there is no excessive fuel to ignite. Thus no shake or shudder.

Called dieseling the engine runs because of unburnt fuel in the chamber. Sometimes caused by injector bleed down

check that the cam shaft is turning as it may be a broken timing belt that is causing your grief. Always run fault codes before wasting money on replacing perfectly good items.

Just bought my vette last Sept. had a similar problem. the AC would work for a while and then shut off. ad a loose plug connecter at the compresser. tried to get a new plug but it is a part of the wireing harness. got a couple of spade clips. cut off the old plug and connected it with the spade clips. end of problem hope this helps. Have you done an engine vacuum leak test with carby cleaner especially around injector seals.A leak will throw a lean signal to oxy sensor there by telling the computer it needs more fuel.Cant think of anything other than what you have already done.
