You need to check your belt tensioner and serpentine belt for slack and listen for any whining noise. The two events of power steering not working and the battery light not working may be related if the belt is slipping.

The slipping on the alternator will also cause the transmission not to shift properly either since it requires a specific amount of voltage in order to shift properly.

If the belt is fine then check the battery terminals for the proper voltage. Take a multimeter to the terminals with the car off and you should get 12.5V, then start the car and let it idle and you should get 14.4V at the terminal. If either of those numbers are off (or both) then you have a failing alternator and/or battery.

I would have the power steering system tested, it is a possible steering rack issue.

High pitched sound near transmission (whee sound)

Are you sure this isn't the power steering pump? I suspect it is as the noise you have described would be rare in an automatic transmission. Have a local repair shop listen to the noise and confirm what I suspect is a defective power steering hydraulic pump..

When I first start up my 1995 Toyota Corolla 5-speed, there is a whirring noise. It seems more prominent when the car is cold and when I turn the steering wheel at that time. Also, the battery light has...

for the whirring noice, check for the power steering fluid level, if it's low refill with power steering fluid to the propper level. If the level its fine and the noise continues you have to tighten the engine belts via the tensioner bearings. As for the battery light it's probably letting you know that the alternator is failing, when the light comes on it means that in that precisse moment the alternator isn't charging the battery and that could lead you to a dead battery. (The alternator has a line that it's in charge of activating the battery light if this cable is loose that could make the light go on, secure that cable and if the light never comes on then the alternator is fine) Hope that helps

2005 Suzuki Forenza warning light: Right side of dash, looks like a steering wheel with exclamation point to the right of it....Power steering seems fine and fluid is full. What is this?.....Thank you!

Speed Sensitive Power Steering

(SSPS) Warning Light

Your vehicle is equipped with Speed Sensitive Power Steering (SSPS).

This is a computer-controlled power steering assist system.

The warning light you are describing will come on briefly when you turn the ignition to ON as a check to show you the bulb is working.

Then it should go out after a few seconds. If the warning light does not come on, have it fixed so it will be able to warn you if there is a problem.

If the warning light stays on, or comes on while you are driving, the SSPS system may not be working.
Your computer will need to be scanned to determine what the problem is with your SSPS system.

On my display "POWER STEERING" warning flashes then stays. When this happens my car will **** as if it is about to die. Could it be a transmission problem or a cpu problem?

Not familiar with a "power steering" warning.

I think this is similar to a oil pressure light coming on. What you are seeing is that the car is trying to stall, so the loss of power causes the power steering pump pressure to drop, and thus the warning.

Need to understand the underlying issues:

(1) Since you start with a power steering warning, must ask, are you making a short turn when this occurs?
(2) If not turning, then need to understand what you are doing when car tries to stall: Driving at highway speeds, idle, car hot/cold?

Could be a CPU problem, less likely a transmission problem, but on a 2005, should be getting a check engine light.

All dash warning lights came on while driving. oil light, brake light, coolant light, battery light. car continued to run. once home turned off and now wont start. warning lights still come on and car...

Hatterasnc,

You're alternator has gone bad and the vehicle was running on battery power. The "clicking" sound is your now dead battery that does not have enough power to turn over the starter. You might also want to check your power steering pump for leak. This is a know problem with early LS400s and will most likey be the cause of the alternator failure. I just dropped $1050.00 to fix the very same promblems you have.
