Question about 1997 Chevrolet K1500

Last time took it in for safety & emmissions inspection they mechanic said that I should replace the hose fitting that enters the top of the engine. I'm not sure what it is but the hose is about a 5/8 inch rubber that connects to a silver metal fitting that enters the engine on top front near the center. Apparently they have a high failure rate due to corrosion near the 100,000 mile mark.

Yes, these do have a high failure rate. This hose goes to the heater core, and if it completely fails, the hose could disconnect itself leaving you stranded with an overheated engine. Also, the older it gets, the harder it is to unthread out of the intake manifold- more time more money. The part is only $10 at parts stores and is made of steel instead of pot metal. The only real challenge is getting the old one off without breaking it off the engine.

My 2005 Aveo will not idle. Any ideas?


Un-do the hose clamp on the air box and the one on the throttle body, carefully disconnect the MAS sensor plug at the top of the hose... remove the hose and inspect it for cracking or breaks. Very common... This condition causes un-metered air to enter the system. The new part is about $80.00 on ebay. It will likely come with a new MAS sensor. JUST BE SURE AND DOUBLE CHECK THE AIR FLOW DIRECTION arrow on the sensor. The last one I did, the part was good but the sensor was installed backward. Took me a while to find that problem.

Power steering fluid leaking. change hose? change pump? Re clamp?


If the hose itself is leaking (not the connection/end) , replace the hose. If the hose is more than 5 years old, I'd probably just replace it. If it's the low pressure hose (return) and it's leaking at the junction, you can probably replace the clamp. If it's the high pressure hose (with the machine-formed hose ends) then replace the hose - a clamp is unlikely to withstand the pressure and you don't want to take the chance of it blowing off when you're turning.

Power steering line replacement?


First drain the oil from the supply tank . A good time to inspect and clean out any dirt. Next clean around the fittings of the line you are removing ,we don't want any dirt to enter the system. Then remove the line, it will be held in place by clips that have to be undone be sure to fit them to the new line. If there is a inline oil filter replace it now. Fill the supply tank with new power steering oil to the full mark . jack the front up till the wheels are off the ground, fit safety jacks. Start engine ,turn steering from lock to lock to bleed out air and top up supply tank.

How hard is it to replace high press. power steering line on 92 sable with 3.8 engine? And can anyone help me find where the speed sensor is on the same vehicle? I can't seem to find it.


The hose is kind of tough since you have to get access to the one fitting going to the rack & pinion unit and route the hose as it was before.

Just tough though, not impossible. I believe I took off the drivers wheel with the car on jack stands & was able to reach from underneath to do that connection a few years ago, the rest isn't as bad.

Get your replacement hose, Pepboys or Autozone, or the dealer & make sure you have the correct size open end type wrenches to fit the hoses & just be careful.

The speed sensor is located on the trans just behind the bellhousing near the firewall, has wires coming out of it & the speedometer cable. I believe it was a 10MM bolt holding the assembly in, once removed you can also inspect the geat & make sure it is actually turning the attached parts making the sensor work.

My heater in my 99 dodge durango does not heat unless the rpms are up.....i think its the heater core is that hard to replace? And where is it located for sure??


This is provided you have confirmed that a plugged or partially plugged heater core is your problem, and not a vacuum problem, or heater control valve or similar is not defective. Yes it certainly sounds like some blockage/restriction there, but may I advise you to try this first, as it may save a lot of money, time, & aggravation. Go to Rona, Home depot, or similar hardware store & buy a drill pump. (about $25.00 in Canada) but there are cheaper ones around.
Remove your heater hoses at the firewall (when engine cold) and you will see the 2 copper ends of your heater core to attach drill pump to. Put one end of the pump (pressure side) on one fitting, of the core and the other hose from pump suction side, into a jug of CLR (calcium ,lime, rust, remover.) The other connection/fitting from your heater core will need a piece of hose going from it, into a pail, or another jug, same size as CLR to retrieve liquid when it flows through. Circulate the CLR through the core a few times, then let it sit in the core for a while. Then reverse the hoses at the core & circulate it through the other way a few times & let it sit in there as well. I let mine fill the core, then I plugged line where CLR would flow out of heater core & then let it sit all night in there to dissolve as much calcium etc., inside as it could. Then next day, I ran pump in both directions/fittings, again to flush everything out. Then I re-attached my heater hoses. My heat increased at least 75% at idle, because it had removed a lot of the restriction in the core.
Make sure you take all safety precautions, such as eye protection in case CLR splashes in your eyes, and make sure engine is cool, pressure is relieved via removal of rad cap & to avoid burn from hot coolant when hoses removed. My guess is that your into $20-$25 tops, and a whole lot less work. Let me know how it goes.

Need info on a 2005 Ford Focus 2L TDCI


2005 Ford Focus L4-2.0L VIN N Hello your vehicle has a timing chain, you do not have to replace it ever... It was designed to last the life of the vehicle, unless you have a water pump, or a timing pulley or even a timing tensioner go bad, that is when you would service the timing chain. MAINTENANCE II

1. CHANGE ENGINE OIL AND FILTER. Reset oil life system. Refer to Engine Oil Life System. An Emission Control Service. 2. VISUALLY CHECK FOR ANY LEAKS OR DAMAGE. A fluid loss in any vehicle system could indicate a problem. Have the system inspected and repaired and the fluid level checked. Add fluid if needed. 3. INSPECT ENGINE AIR CLEANER FILTER. If necessary, replace filter. An Emission Control Service. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency or the California Air Resources Board has determined that the failure to perform this maintenance item will not nullify the emission warranty or limit recall liability prior to the completion of the vehicle's useful life. We, however, urge that all recommended maintenance services be performed at the indicated intervals and the maintenance be recorded. 4. CHECK TIRE INFLATION PRESSURES AND WEAR. 5. INSPECT BRAKE SYSTEM. Visually inspect brake lines and hoses for proper hook-up, binding, leaks, cracks, chafing, etc. Inspect disc brake pads for wear and rotors for surface condition. Inspect other brake parts, including calipers, parking brake, etc. 6. CHECK ENGINE COOLANT AND WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID LEVELS AND ADD FLUID AS NEEDED. 7. PERFORM ANY NEEDED ADDITIONAL SERVICES. Refer to Additional Required Services. 8. INSPECT SUSPENSION AND STEERING COMPONENTS. Visually inspect front and rear suspension and steering system for damaged, loose or missing parts or signs of wear. Inspect power steering lines and hoses for proper hook-up, binding, leaks, cracks, chafing, etc. 9. INSPECT ENGINE COOLING SYSTEM. Visually inspect hoses and have them replaced if they are cracked, swollen or deteriorated. Inspect all pipes, fittings and clamps. To help ensure proper operation, a pressure test of the cooling system and pressure cap and cleaning the outside of the radiator and air conditioning condenser is recommended at least once a year. 10. INSPECT WIPER BLADES. Visually inspect wiper blades for wear or cracking. Replace blade inserts that appear worn or damaged or that streak or miss areas of the windshield. 11. INSPECT RESTRAINT SYSTEM COMPONENTS. Make sure the safety belt reminder light and all your belts, buckles, latch plates, retractors and anchorages are working properly. Look for any other loose or damaged safety belt system parts. If you see anything that might keep a safety belt system from doing its job, have it repaired. Have any torn or frayed safety belts replaced. Also look for any opened or broken air bag coverings, and have them repaired or replaced. (The air bag system does not need regular maintenance.) 12. LUBRICATE BODY COMPONENTS. Lubricate all key lock cylinders, hood latch assembly, secondary latch, pivots, spring anchor, release pawl, rear compartment hinges, outer liftgate handle pivot points, rear door detent link, roller mechanism, liftgate handle pivot points, latch bolt, fuel door hinge, cargo door hinge, locks and folding seat hardware. More frequent lubrication may be required when exposed to a corrosive environment. Applying silicone grease on weather-strips with a clean cloth will make them last longer, seal better and not stick or squeak. 13. REPLACE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT AIR FILTER. If you drive regularly under dusty conditions, the filter may require replacement more often.

1995 ES 300 - antifreeze is draining from reserve. took to a mechanic who did diagnostic. said everything was fine. said no antifreeze in radiator so he topped off. 2 weeks later, the car is running hot...


Is the reserve tank cracked or have a deteriorated hose going to the radiator? Remove the tank to find out. A bad seal on the radiator cap can also lose fluid. A coolant leak anywhere can deplete the coolant level in the radiator and reserve tank. Check your owners manual for antifreeze type and mix ratio with water.

your owners manual will tell you exactly. usually all filters should be changed (oil, air, auto transmission if equipped, fuel, cabin air etc) as well as spark plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor if equipped, check the belts and hoses as well as the charging system. All fluid levels should be checked and topped off. Check your tire p.s.i. as well.
