Question about 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe

The 2 screws holdig the the shift arm to the steering column broke. should i take it to a dealership to fix and will it b expensive?

The lever has a machined end where it fits directly into a slot so it will shift properly for you. If forced ar misaligned damage may occur which can be expensive to fix. I would recomend to take it to the dealer

Extremely Loose steering column. Not just a little wiggle room, wheel moves up, down farther than normal tilt and left, right so far wheel touches wiper/lights/signal arms.


I believe your steering wheel is coming off take vehicle to dealership asap and don't drive. A screw or something fell out

How can i fix broken shifter on 2003 ford super Duty , automatic ? Seems like a pin broke and i cant put it into gear or out .


hey look under neath where ur driver footpedals are. chances are that the rubber grommet on the end of ur cable came off or broke.. look up into the column area an look for the black cable goin to a pivot point on shifter arm. reconnect. but will prob need new cable cause if end is no good will fall of again. move shifter back an forth to help u locate area of cable

Loose column shifter


Look under dash where steering column is. Find the connection for the shift cable. see if the mount that the cable end connects to is loose. wiggle it. If it is there are 2 torx screws that mount the bracket to the shift tube that you need to tighten. I think they are a T-27 size bit. This is a common problem on fords. easy fix. I usually will take the screws out and use a thread locking compound in them to stop it from happening again.

I have a problem. I have a 94 lincoln. It wont go into gear. The automatic gear shift drops all the way down with no shifting


Most likely, either the shift tube is damaged/broken or the screws have backed out of the lever at the end of the shift tube that the shift cable connects to. If the shift lever feels really "floppy", then you probably have a broken shift tube. You will probably have to pull the steering column down to get a good look at the shift tube to see if it is broken and to see how much play is in the shift tube bushings. Also look to see if the lever at the end of the shift tube is loose (shift cable lever).

A little word of caution: If you take the steering column down, be sure to disconnect the shift indicator cable first so it does not get broken. There is a tiny screw in the plastic braket that must be removed then the cable loop will simply slip off of the nipple on the shift tube arm.

Anyway, you will need a T-30 torx bit to work on the shift tube, the shift tube bushings and the lever at the end of the shift tube.

I made you a graphic below to help you understand what I am saying. Please note that it is NOT necessary to remove the steering wheel to do this, but you will need to remove the upper steering column shrouds if the shift tube bushings are loose.

It sounds like the shift tube bushings are worn out. There are usually 2 u shaped clamps that have nylon bushings that hold the shift tube to the steering clumn. If loose, that throws off the shift position, could be btween 2 gears at once, and throws off the park - neutral safety switch. Fix that first.

Gear shift lever in column is loose


your problem with the gear selector is in the item 25 these are 2 plastic bushings that wear out and cause the gear selector feels loose, you should also check the item 27 this item has one or two screws loose and cause the gear selector feels loose

Gear shift is loose windstar sel 2001


You need to screw a bolt which is located under the steering column. Take off a panel under the steering column. Take a flush light look under and jiggle the shifter arm. There is a bolt (I think it's a star shaped so you need to buy it) connecting 2 parts of linkage. It will be loose. Screw it and shifter arm will be as new.

Shifting column is not working properly, tranny is ok


Take the cable or linkage off the tranny. Push the tranny arm into park. If it is a linkage then adjust your linkage to match to tranny arm. If it is a cable with it disconnected see if it moves when you move the gear shift, The cable should move freely. You can pull on the end of the cable to make sure it is not broken. Make sure that your tranny arm moves in all gears. Please chalk the wheels so you don't get hurt.
