Question about 1997 Saturn SL

Chaged transmission on 1997 saturn now it will not

I changed automatic transmission on 1997 Saturn now it will not shift out of low gear. I found a used transmission out of a insurance wreck in a salvage yard, transmission was clean and fluid looked very good, it also had a new filter on it. Also had to change black screw in sensing unit in rear of tranny,

It sounds like you have the wrong transmission. If your car is a DOHC aka an SL2, SC2, or SW2 then you have an MP7 transmission. If you have a SOHC, aka a SL1, SC1, or SW1 then you have an MP6. You need the right transmission for the right motor...DOHC needs the MP7 while the SOHC needs the MP6.

On top of that, you need the correct gear ratios which changed over the years. Your '97 CANNOT use a '98-'02 transmission. It must be 1991-1997 if it is an MP7 or 1993-1997 if it is an MP6.

Otherwise the PCM will not shift the wrong transmission.

Chances are you didn't take it out of the car you thought you did. It has to be the same year range as I mentioned. Check the stamping on the bell housing and verify the year and MP model (6 or 7). It's in a dot matrix stamping and probably needs to be cleaned really well in order to read it.

2001 Saturn SL1. Transmission (automatic) shifts hard when putting it in gear and every gear there after. The only codes I get is PO442 and PO410. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My 1997 Saturn automatic kicks going into 2nd and 3rd gear.

The clonk sounds like you have a loose nut on the mainshaft of your transmission, I don't have an article on it yet, but for now you can also check these 2:
Reverse slam fix
Swapping a Valve body on Saturn TAAT transaxle

I will have an article on how to tighten the mainaxle nut shortly

1997 sL1 Saturn manual transmission hard to change gears

The dipstick is behind the battery, below the master brake cylinder and is not the clutch reservoir. It has a red flip top handle instead of a ring like most dipsticks. It was hard for me to find due to engine grease. I had the same problem and was able to see that I was low on fluid (only a little) and adding fluid helped the problem. 1997 sc2 saturn automatic

I had a 1991 Dodge Caravan that did the same thing. I had a transmission rebuilt because of the problem you describe. I was told it was a seal inside the transmission that was leaking fluid from an internal chamber when the engine was at an idle (like it is when you are at a stop sign). A redesigned seal fixed my problem. I would bet if you gave it a little gas with one foot and kept your foot on the brake it wouldn't act like it had dropped out of gear. If you have the money for a transmission rebuild that might be something to consider but if you are tight on money, a bottle of lucas transmission additive might help your problem. That seemed to help me so I could get some money together for a transmission rebuild. I realize that most mechanics will say that your transmission doesn't need an additive of any kind, I also realize that sometimes in real life you have to do what your pocketbook/ wallet can afford.

Good luck.
