U need to have the battery tested is the 1st thing to do, the next is make sure all the battery connections are clean and tight, this includes the connection of the negative cable to the engine and the positive cable at the starter motor positive cable post, u have a bad connection or a defective battery it is one or both of these problems, the gauges boucing is the dead give away for this problem, it is caused by low voltage.

My 1998 pontiac firebird security light is on and will not start. What do I do?

Usually the sensor in the key lock is not reading the chip in the key, or the chip has failed.
I would try a spare key first. If the light stays on with both keys, you'll need to get the anti-theft system checked out.

My 97 pontiac firebird gas gauge doesnt move

Dear Madam or Sir,

please remove the multi plug from the tank sensor, short the contacts in it with ignition switched on. Now the gauge should move to max.

If it does not do so, the gauge is defective.

My 2002 firebird won't start when you turn the key on the gauges go backwards and the starter won't turn the engine over. If you jump across the starter the car starts and runs a couple seconds then dies....

All of the power goes through the starter. First check to see if you have a bad power wire .If the starter is shorted you loose the power. I think replacing the starter will correct your problem.

How can you turn off or reset anti-theft alarm in daughter's 1998 Pontiac Firebird because it activated somehow and now the car won't start?

You cannot shut it off, If was that easy a thief could steal it.

You need to get the code and fix the problem. Most likely the problem is the key tumbler failed. If this is the case the code would say something like could not reconize key

Firebird Won't start

Very possible its the neutral safety switch. Try putting the car in neutral and turning the key. If it starts then I'd investigate the linkage and/or neutral safety switch. Best of luck.

Why would my 99'firdbird not start when I turn the key?

The vehicle could have a faulty ignition switch, the computer could be damage. There could be a loose ground wire. The fuses could be blown . The starter relay fuse in the engine compartment could be shorted . I would try and take the vehicle in to a local mechanic to diagnose.

Car starts run's 3 seconds shuts down

Your car is equipped with a system called PASSKEY standard on all GM cars and light trucks, try the following procedure to reset the system, the battery being dead will trigger the system.

PASSKEY LOCKOUT RESET GM CARS 1999 UP
1) Put the key in the ignition and turn to the "ON" position. Leave it that way for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes turn the key and take it out. Repeat this process (2) more times (3 times, 30 minutes total) This should reset the passlock system to recognize your key.
