FRONT TIRE BOUNCE AT 40-50 MPH

FRONT TIRE AND AXLE BOUNCE AT 40-50 MPH AFTER HITTING BUMPS. MUST SLOW DOWN TO CORRECT IT. REPLACED SHOCKS, BALANCED TIRES, REPLACED STEERING BOX, REPLACED BUSHINGS. INSPECTED ENTIRE FRONT END, ect.

Relace your shocks. the design of any dampner(strut or shock design) is to return the wheel to the road for handling and safety. when the shock is worn out is with continue to bounce like a basketball. it has no more strength to return to wheel to the road. a common misconception is that they are there to absorb, not true. the springs or torsion bars are there to absorb and create ride height. the shock does nothing more then return the wheel to the road. simple and inexpensive.

2 Possible issues: When the tires hit a bump, it causes them to lose the "drag" that they need to be in position & if the alignment is off more than just a little, you will get a hopping tire as it attempts to regain it posture. Slowing down allows the drag from the brakes to help get it back in line.

I've seen tires with water do a similar thing which makes sense since when the water gets disturbed inside of them, it would cause the "balanced" tire to be out of balance. I specifically had a mechanic in my early years, '74 attempt to balance a tire using the type of balancer that dealerships used that was pushed up against the tire mounted on the vehicle, it rotated the tire & the mechanic adjusted the little balancers mounted on the wheel to determine the location & need for weight. "OLD but it worked. He couldn't get my tire to balance & it would start bouncing during the test-off & on. I later discovered by replacing the tire that it had a few cups of water in it & by the rust of the wheel, it had been there for a while. After that, I've checked & found water more than once & it has cured many a bounce & imbalance situation. Good Luck

Shocks and struts


When it comes to shocks and suspension, many people are confused as to what the shocks on their vehicle do. The job of the shock is to slow down and damp the movement of the body on the wheel. The real function of shock absorbers are to: 1) Prevent bottoming, that is slowing down the compression of the spring and create lifting force on the wheel.
2}Prevent the tires from bouncing up and down on bumps and absorb some of the energy.
3)Keep the vehicle from bouncing up and down on the springs before settling down.
I’ve put together a few simple tests you can do even if you have no mechanical knowledge about your Lexus at all. The same principle applies for strut suspension.
1}Push your weight down on the front or rear of your Lexus and release .The vehicle should bounce up and settle down. If it continues to bounce the shocks are worn out.
2)Drive over a small bump at a speed of 20 mph and the wheel should lift to it and settle down without a thud.(the thud is the rubber snubber)
3)At 60 mph the vehicle should rise and fall quickly over a dip, then stabilize itself after 2 rebounds..If it does not the vehicle will feel like it is floating and this makes the steering very unstable.
4)On rough roads does your vehicle shake and vibrate after you go a short distance? Well if it does, it is because the oil in the shock is overheating and starting to foam. That problem can be corrected with a nitrogen gas shock.
5)The last is to look at the shock or strut and see if it is leaking oil, if so it has no compression or rebound.
If your Lexus failed any of these tests either the shocks are worn out are mismatched for your vehicle. Some of the best shocks and struts on the market are Bilstein’s Monroe, and KYBs . And remember that maintaining the shocks and or struts on your Lexus is very important to the handling and tire wear on any Lexus.

My 1989 Chevey Celebrity started shaking the other day the front part of the car, not like the front end is messed up but it shakes.


Could be a wheel, tire, or axle shaft.
You could rotate the tires front to back and see if the vibration moves.
If it does the problem is one of the tires or wheels.
If it stays in the front, its probably one of the axle shafts. It could also be a hub bearing or something loose in the suspension. But a loose suspension part would normally show up when you hit a bump rather than on a smooth road.

When should my shocks be replaced


well sometimes they claim that this shock has a 45,000 mi average life, Also note the wear on the tire if there is any. An over inflated tire will wear in the center more than the edge, a under inflated tire will wear on the outer edges, a bad shock can cause a tire to wear not necessarily the tread but the smootness of the tire, is it all rough with raised tread edges or uneveness? Does the vehicle have sway or does vehicle bounce or washboard when hitting bumps? does the shock have visual signs of fluid leak? These are all signs of shock failure and should be replaced. And not necessarily al four at he same time, replace shock with manufacturer equipment if replacing only one, if replacing two on the same axle you can use aftermarket matched shocks or factory oem.

A few possibilities.... bent rim, broken steel belt in tire, or a wheel weight that keeps the tire/wheel combination in balance has fallen off. Not sure how big the bump was, so other options would be suspension related. I would check the tire and/or wheel first.

Front end feels like it is bouncing when hit 55mph and faster


Sounds like worn shocks but could be wheels totally out of balance if it it's very quick. Slow would be shocks.

you are getting an oscillation .you need to put the front tires on the back and try it again as it could be bad tires.
if it is still the same,put the vehicle on a hoist and check the tire/rim play side to side and up and down.
turn the wheel and check for bearing noise.
common things are wheel balancing,tires,tie rod ends,worn axles and bearings.

chances are your shocks are worn out completely. replace the shocks with a good quality set and take it for a drive. cheers.

Steering problem


Shocks are usually pretty much shot after 45-50K. Also check damper (sideways shock on steering linkage). Shake is either wheel balance or a worn steering component (should have been checked before alignment...shame on them if they didn't)
