Question about 1998 Buick LeSabre
Drain down the radiator by either syphoning out or removing lower radiator hose or the petcock at the bottom of the radiator. Place a pan under the water pump area to catch the coolant. Loosen the serpentine belt tensioner (it just pivots) BUT make sure you either draw a sketch of how the belt goes back on or have a diagram under the hood. There are 4 bolts (10mm) on the water pump pulley. Remove them. There are 6 or 7 (I forget) bolts that actually hold the water pump in place. It's easy to figure out where they are if you have the NEW water pump handy to see where the bolt holes are. I think they are 13 or 15 mm or maybe some of each. Make sure you have removed all the bolts. Lower bolts are hard to get to. Tap the old waterpump GENTLY with a rubber mallet to loosen. CLEAN very well the area where the new gasket will go. Wipe with rubbing alcohol or carb cleaner to remove all traces of the old gasket sealer. Ask what type of gasket sealer the Auto Store recommends. Make sure the new water pump comes with a enw gasket. Reassmble and when you tighten the bolts on the water pump DON'T tighten them down all at once. Go criss-cross and tighen a little bit at a time once the gasket is seated. I would recommend re-filling with NEW coolant rather than using the old stuff. Fill the radiator, start the car and watch for air bubbles. Run for a minute or two, turn car off, replace radiator cap. Start car and let warm up. Turn off. LET CAR COOL DOWN and then recheck fluid level.
