Question about 1989 Ford Mustang

4 Answers

I was running this car in my driveway, when it died all of a sudden and will not restart. I find that there is no spark, and the fuel-pump is constantly running when the key is on. Help!

Not an option. I have a permanent fuel-pressure gage, which is reading 40 pounds, 3 pounds more than it normally reads, and still keeps running. THERE IS NO SPARK.

I'll check it out. The instrument panel's temporarily removed, but I'll jury-rig a check-engine light and run codes, then test the coil, although I don't know how to test the TFI module.

I just tried to run codes, and the light wouldn't even come on. I assume the EEC needs to be replaced, right? Maybe the EEC relay? How do I check that?

29 amp fuse for EEC relay was blown. When replaced, car started and ran good, but check engine light stayed on. On testing, it was throwing codes 22, 84, and 85

20 amp fuse to EEC relay was blown. Whe replaced, car stated and ran well, but check engine light stayed on. On testing, it threw codes 22, 84, and 85.

The problem is solved. It was a blown 20amp fuse to the EEC relay. No idea what could have blown a 20amp fuse, but it's been running okay since I replaced it yesterday morning.

Hello Ford Cobra.
Strange the fuel pump stays running as soon as the key is on.
This is leading me towards a possible relay problem that is also affecting the power relay that powers up the injection system.
Is there power to the ignition coil momentarily as the key is turned on?
If so the power relay is working and will lead to the next diagnosis step.
Keep me informed.

    Hello Ford.
Glad to see you got it going.
Two thumbs for a solution as close as I was right off the start doesn't seem quite fair.
Too bad we didn't stay on it together throughout the repair procedure.

Make sure the distributor rotor is turning,if it is not, then the timing chain has broken. If it has not, then I would suggest the tfi module(ignition module in the distributor).Or the pick up coil. The tfi can be checked at NAPA auto parts to make sure,if the tfi checks good, replace the pick up coil.

Spray some brake cleaner or quick start. If its starts the fuel pump is not building pressure. It failed or you ran out of gas.

If you have no spark then your ignition module failed or the crank sensor if this is fuel injected.

Also its possible the computer failed internally and maybe thats why the pump stays on.

If light doesnt come on first check to make sure the bulb did not pop. Very common

You may need to check fuel pressure after the engine warms up and shuts off. Maybe the fuel pump gets hot and stops. Have you checked for spark after it dies?

As with any no start situation, you will need to figure out if you are lacking spark or fuel to proceed.
If you have spark to the plugs, you would check the fuel pressure with a gauge. You can try spraying starting fluid into the throttle body to substitute the fuel supply for testing.

Any service engine light?
Can you hear the fuel pump hmm for about 2 seconds when you first turn the key on?
If no, then it may be the pump, relay, ECM or the circuit in between them. Since it got out the driveway I would lean towards the pump. Another thing to check that powers the fuel pump is the Oil Pressure Switch. It will energize the pump when there is oil pressure.

If the fuel pump does buzz, check for spark. Pull a spark plug wire and set it by a ground source (a bolt on the head or rocker cover, not a fuel line!). Don't touch the wire as there is high voltage crank the engine over while someone watches for a spark. If no spark then take the ignition module to an autozone to have it tested.

If there is a fuel pump buzz and a spark then the fuel pressure should be tested.

Car dies intermittantly like no fuel or fire - car cools down and restarts

Need to know make and model, but do these tests: Run the car until it dies. Pop hood, pull one plug wire off of a spark plug, place an old but working spark plug in the connector, lay the spark plug on any metal. Have someone crank car. Do you see a spark? If so, then ignition working. Most likely cause of a car that dies with a working ignition system is the fuel pump system.
Pump working? Do this test: With car that just died, turn key off. Turn key on again (not to start, just to "on"). Do you hear the faint hum of the fuel pump? (I'm assuming your car is fuel injected. Carbureted - just check the ignition as above.) If so, then it could be any of the sensors. Run the engine codes. You should find something. If you DON'T hear the pump run for about 5-7 seconds then shut off automatically, then it is either your pump or the pump relay. Get those looked at.

Died and it wont start

listen for fuel pump running at fuel tank when key is turned to "ON". runs for 5 seconds. If yes, then check for spark at plugs. If no then fuel pump is not running. Check fuse per owner manual or replace pump in tank.

first thing you got to do is determen weather its electrical or fuel problem, you can take a test light and hook to a ground and the light end to a spark plug and see if it lights while someone turns over engine, if it lights you got spark. if its got spark, on to fuel, take fuel pressure test, don't think because you can hear pump working does not mean it is, it can sound like it is but its not, at least putting out enought pressure, not the correct amount it will not run. pumps will go out just that way with no warning at all.
