Sounds like a bad connection,or a bad starter,if you can get under it and smack starter with a hammer,it may be stuck....check connections first... iif it doesnt take off then you need a starter....if it was running fine when you shut it off.. not been sitting for long while, knocking when you shut it off,or over heated..

When I tried to starmy 02 Explorer XLT , the starter clicked once. I tryed jumping it, same thing. I tried tto move the shifter, it was stuck. Next I checked the battery voltage, 12.34 volts. The bat

12.34 is barely enough voltage. check for dirty connections at the starter and the battery. if these are okay then check for voltage at the starter large cable it should be battery voltage then with someone trying to start the car check voltage on the small terminal of the starter it should be battery voltage. if you don`t have this on either terminal then check for lose of voltage. what is the voltage at the battery when you try to start the car. if it drops below 11 volts then the battery is weak and either needs to be charged and tested or replaced. even with a jump start attempt a bad battery will not allow enough voltage to start the car. if these items are okay then replace the starter.

2008 malibu classic won't start

Grab a test light go down to the starter, hook to a good ground and probe the battery cable. If that has power probe the solenoid engage wire( its the little one) have a helper turn the key to start if that gets power replace the starter.

06 pontiac grand prix wont start no clicking when you turn the key over even jump starting the battery, has dash lights & radio & parking lights. battery tested good. put a used starter & altinator on

Used parts such as starters and altinators don't last. It might **** but it sounds like you need to buy a new starter, altinator, and battery. Or just start with buying one at a time.

I have a 1997 Honda Accord ... the battery is okay ... it won't click or turn over ... the Hazard Lights are on continuously ... the car will start with a rolling start (it is a manual transmission)...

Hi, have you tried to bypass the interlock switch on the clutch pedal arm? Just ground the blue wire. also check the 50 amp fuse #42. if not that, the starter relay may be bad or possibly the starter itself. To check the starter, please read my post here: http://www1.fixya.com/cars/r6222268-engine_doesnt_crank_turn_over

Won't start, battery okay, horn blowing

It takes a lot less power to blow a horn.
I have been reluctant to use horn or lights as an indication of a good battery.
To find out definitively, jump start the vehicle; if it starts you need atleast a batter maybe an alternator as well.
If it does not start with a jump possibly bad starter or power to the starter.
I would eliminate the battery first.

Starting Problem

Probably a bad starter as well. A good battery can make a marginal starter work, but over time the battery will be weakened by the drain of the starter or the starter will get worse.

Remove the starter and take it to your local parts store for testing and replacement. Bring your battery along as the bad starter might have toasted it.

Also a bad battery can wear out a starter quickly.

We had issues like this with our pickup truck a few years back. Replaced the battery, worked okay for a while, then the replaced the starter, worked okay for a while, then the battery was bad. Eventually replaced both and haven't had any issues since.

So when replacing one it is a good idea to check the other.

Battery seems dead but lights and everything electrical seems fine smoke comes from battery if you jump it

Okay, what you seem to be saying is the battery does not turn over the engine and the battery smokes when you jump it to start it. But the lights and radio and everything works except the car will not turn over by itself. The battery smokes because either the battery has a short in it, it smokes because the starter is dragging, and/or the jump wires are not hooked up red to red and black to black. You need to have the battery and starter checked. If the car runs take it to an autoparts place to test. Or if it won't run take out the battery have it tested and if it is good, then take out the starter to test it.

1987 F150 302 ci. EFI, Automatic, Was running good. Next morning NOTHING! Wouldn't start or crank over? Just clicking and buzzing, Headlights OKAY. Tried jump starting... NO GOOD. Took battery in... Was...

try over riding the starter relay on the fender ,it has one there right?. dont go to a mechanic yet. the engine aint seized. if it doesnt have this relay then i would get the alternator tested. if you want to test it yourself it can be costly for the right equip. autozone usually tests for free. i dont know were you live so if theres not an autozone. let me know if you cant get it tested.
