Question about Dodge Ram Pickup 1500

1 Answer

I have a 2001 dodge ram 1500 4x4 with a 360 motor. the rpms surge up and down when driving steady speeds(usually between 35-50mph). I had to tranny shop and they replaced the tcc/od solenoid 2 times cause it kept showing up on computer as code p1740. Need help figuring out. 600 dollars later the truck still drives the same

Since you have already replaced the TCC solenoid, this problem is then confined to one of the following, the wiring harness has a problem that gives a poor connection and set the code or the torque converter magnetic clutch is defective, the most common problem is the torque converter on this transmission, and lots of Dodge forums bear this out, in that the torque converter cures the persistent P1740, it seems the TCC and OD solenoid pack is seldom the problem, i suggest you bite the bullet and replace the torque converter. U can also contact these transmission experts at the link below, they can supply the parts and give much more expert advice on this as Dodge transmission are there special field of repair and there prime bushiness.

.Ok I have a 01

It sounds to me like there is a problem with your Idle Speed Control solenoid/motor. (ISC) These can sometimes fail without turning on the Check Engine light. If the Check Engine light is coming on while you are driving, you should have the computer system checked out first. This will lead you to the proper fix.

Transmission code P1740

The transmition is slipping, dodge trucks are noted for their tranny problems, I just replaced mine ($2400)bearly over 100,000 miles on the truck. Watch the engine temp if you keep driving it. It may start to over heat. Get it to a reputable transmition shop ASAP,Some place that garentees/warentees their work.
As for the heat/AC I would check for vacuum leaks. Get either a Hanes or Chilton's manual for it and it will tell you how to check the system.

Dodge ram 1500 engine rpms surge at freeway speed

those sensors could cause the issue, clean the MAF 1st, also clean the idle system using the following procedure, the IAC can cause cruise surge. I use this to cure these problems all the time.

Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls and low idle, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve (IAC) and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
