Question about 2000 Volkswagen Beetle

I have a 2000 vw beetle 2.0ltr it started to over heat thought it was the water pump so changed that and its still overheating changed the thermostat still over heating iv also had the head gasket checked and the fluid stayed the same didnt change colour not sure what is up with it the heaters are warm as anyone got any ideas thanks

It is possible that the pump failed because of an overheating problem. Make sure the fans run by turning on the air conditioning. They should operate as soon as it is turned on. Bad fans are a common problem. The pump should not have been leaking after replacement though. Make sure you have no leaks first and foremost. Then make sure the fans work. There is also a fan control module located in the area under the battery, but it is difficult to properly diagnose. If the fans do not turn on with the a/c, you can jump the wires at the thermo switch. One should be power, and when you jump to one wire they should go to low speed, the other high.

2000 vw Beetle keeps overheating. Have changed thermostat but problem is still there. The abs light is now staying on too.


The ABS light is a separate problem from your cooling issue.
Cooling issue:

Replacing your thermostat would usually solve old cooling problems. Times have change and so does technology and materials together with ISO manufacturing process. So the days of a stuck thermostat are long gone. Usually it's not the manufacturing of the thermostat that causes it to get stuck but the quality of the coolant itself. VW redesigned it's GL12 coolant to be phosphate free. This keeps rust and residue build up to a minimum.

Solution:

Although VW redesigned it's coolant, they went cheap with the choice of materials for the pump. The pump uses a plastic composite impeller, who knows if it were cost or it's properties. This impeller cracks int the area at the shaft which is connected to the pulley. You need an aftermarket water pump such as this 7448f15.jpg It uses a metal impeller so that tells you something. You can also oredr the pump from MJM Autohaus in Texas if you live in the US, they have competitive prices together with free shipping. This particular brand cost is $49.95. My suggestion when doing a water pump job is to replace the timing belt too. It's in the way and needs to be removed to get to the pump., so keep that in mind. Also use the red coolant from VW which is GL-12 ONLY.

ABS issue.
A scan of the ABS controller needs to be done. This will tell you what failed within it's system. This the correct way specially when the issue deals with your safety. Never go cheap with the brake system, because when it fails, you'd smack yourself silly after the accident. It could also be a minor problem with the wheel sensors being dirty or a bent sensor wheel located behind the brake rotors.

With this kind of info, it should have a good rating at least. Good luck.

does it sound like there is any compression. remove cover on the right side that covers t-belt see if belt might have broken. if cooling system failed could have blow fuse for cooling fans. causing overheating.

hi it mite be that the water pumps impeller is made of plastic on these models an they break up after time (very common on audis an vw same engines)and dont pump the water effectivley the car constantley over heat.the solution is to but a pump wid a metal impeller ive had the same problem on my audi a3 turbo..also changing the thermostat is an option...hope this helps

that will the next thing.
make sure the water is restricted at any point, from the lower hose to the engine back to the upper hose and back to the radiator.
the best way to check that out is to flash the radiator. you can see the water change color and feel the engine temperture.

sounds like another plastic rad has bitten the dust,replace the rad or hose if its split and refill with antifreeze and see what happens ,if ok then good if not post here again for more advice

Noise when car is started


Sounds like the starter stays "sticked"on... Check the starter relay or after the sound goes away touch the starter for heat. If its too hot it means it stays on working even when the engine is allready running...

Overheating problem


water pump. water pump. water pump. i am a vw dealer tech and on 2.0 and 1.8t beetles the water pump impeller is plastic, and what happens is usually another component, fans, fan control module (under battery tray), thermostat, fails and because the impeller is plastic with just one overheat the plastic becomes brittle and shatters, pull the water pump out and you will see the impeller in 3 or 4 pieces. replace water pump and make sure t stat opens, fans come on (a/c off) and proper water pump flow.
