Question about Audi A4

1 Answer

I have an Audi A4 1,8T 2005; kilometerage is about 70 000 km. The problem is that the heating system does not blow warm air inside at all, only cold air of the same temperature as that outside just now In Finland i.e. 20 minus degrees Celsius! Terrible! The motor thermometer shows plus 90 degrees C. which is normal. However, the hot coolant water does not seem to pass through the heater core, although the heater blower works alright. The automechanic at an Audi repair workshop seems not to know how to fix the problem. He has already changed the pump, but to no effect. What should I do? I am freezing.

The engine is warming up to the operating temp, so the problem is with the heater core matrix/cell/? or something else which I do not understand as a layman. I first found a minor leakage of cooling agent under the car engine, to repair that leakage the mechanic removed the thermostat casing/housing and exchanged the gasket/seal (that is how I was informed, I hope the English terms are correct ;)! Actually the heating problem started after the above gasket exchange procedure. I suspect something went wrong with the repair!

Anyway, thanks for your good answer. I would appreciate if you could add your comment on the leakage I mentioned (which is now repaired though) and your suggestions as to what I should propose to my Audi repair workshop manager so as to put things right to keep the heating system operating. Thanks once more for your prompt service.

U need to look more into the heat/cold control head and test air door actuator control motor. if the engine isnt warming up to operating temp than u need to change thermostat.

thank u for your reply glad to help anyway i can. and to the leak when changing the thermostat you can get air in the system usually ends up in the heater core when that happens your heat will be cold until you rev the engine up and gets cold when u return to idle. that can be cured by purging the system.

When I put the heat on in my car it blows warm air for a few seconds then goes to blowing out cold air.

The lack of heat in the car has little to do with the car's cooling system, other than the hot coolant is the heat source. 95% of all "no-heat" issues are related to heater controls and/or the heater core itself. Since you get some heat, and then it goes away, this indicates a probable vacuum leak in the heater controls. When you select heat, vacuum is directed to a vacuum motor. This motor operates a vacuum actuator that moves a linkage that moves a door inside the heater box to direct the interior air through the heater core. If this actuator has a leak, it will activate, then as the vacuum leaks off, deactivate. You probably need to have a part replaced in the heater actuator mechanism.

No heat but blows cold air

flush radiator, check coolant level, check heater core, check timing, and if all tests fine get a compression test to rule out head problems.

AC blows warm air whil idle or at first start

U could be run on eco a/c where the engine is using the power until it has extra to spare. Warm at start could be simlarly that there is now cold air yet and has to "make" cold air to distribute when ready. See if u can find a setting for reg use. cheers, ps eco saves dollars/euros.

My Audi 2005 Air con system will not blow cold air is this anything to do with the vent at the front of the vehicle that creates an airflow

Well, I don't know. I would have to see the car.
Generally, as long as air can flow thru the condenser and radiator, the ac system can produce cold air.
As for the interior, you normally pull in outside air and cool or heat it, but you can also recirculate inside air which would close off the outside fresh air intake for the cabin.

Audi A4 1.9tdi Quattro 1997- Blower fan was only blowing cold air. Changed intercooler radiator as it was leaking, but fan still blowing cold air. engine temp went over half and then came back down. Only...

REPLACE THERMOSTAT.MAKE SURE COOLANT SUPPLY PIPE OR COOLANT RETURN PIPE NOT STOPPED UP AND YOU HAVE ENOUGH COOLANT IN THE SYSTEM.REPLACE THERMOSTAT.CRANK ENGINE UP AND LET IDLE UNTIL WARM UP KEEP EYES ON TEMPERATURE GAUGE. WHEN ENGINE THERMOSTAT OPEN COOLANT HOSE SHOULD BE HOT.IF NOT TURN OFF ENGINE.USE LARGE RAG WAIT A WHILE BEFORE REMOVING RADIATOR CAP CHECK TO SEE IF COOLANT LEVEL DROPPING IF SO ADD MORE COOLANT.CRANK ENGINE UP UNTIL THERMOSTAT OPENS UP.HOSE WILL GET HOT.IF STILL COLD CHECK COOLANT LEVEL.ONCE YOU AIR OUT COOLANT SYSTEM RADIATOR HOSES WILL GET HOT SO YOU WILL GET HEAT.IF COOLANT LOW YOU WONT GET NO HEAT.
