Question about 1993 Jeep Cherokee Country
I got a 1993 jeep Cherokee and when I try to start it all it does is crank but wont start. I have replaced the spark plugs, cap and rotor, air-filter, and have taken it to 3 mechanics but none of them or what I have done have helped...... any ideas???
To start any engine you need three things. 1. fuel (getting into the cylinders...at the rail is not enough) 2. Air make sure the air filter is not blocked. 3. Spark (needs to happen at the correct time as well as just being there.
You have taken care of some of these items but have not mentioned exactly what you have/don't have. Do you see spark coming from the coil wire as it is being cranked? Is there spark coming from the wires at the plugs? Does the fuel pressure read normal at the rail? Is the fuel reaching the cylinders? What is the compression? Three mechanics and none can figure it out? shame on them!!
Get yourself a Haynes or Chilton manual and run through the sensor tests. You need a decent digital multi-meter to do that. I'm attaching a link for a wiring diagram so you can see what goes to what.
Don't loose sight of the fact that there is an engine underneath all the electronics...everything there needs to be good or nothing will help. http://www.scribd.com/doc/18999822/Jeep-Wiring-2
At this point I'm betting on a crank sensor or shutdown relay not working but you need to test before doing anything.

There is a pickup coil below the distributor needs to be replaced. I had the same issue with my 93 jeep. If you had driven it with this problem and it does not shut down while driving but has a difficult time restarting, my money is on this solution.
I spent a lot of time money and energy trying to analyze this issue and finally resolved it with the coil, I believe it was called the pickup coil. Ask your mechanic to check that.
