Could be a broken belt in a tire but the shop that balanced the wheels should have seen that, Otherwise, it's likely that you have a bad hub bearing (front or rear...you need to listen and determine where the noise comes from) or a C/V joint going bad (usually a boot will be torn or split if that is the case) One note though...hub bearings are built very well and don't get loose 'till the very end. don't rely on shaking the tire to test them. If the noise is there, it's bad.
Good luck!

Not sure what the "mechanic" actually did but you may have lost a wheel balance weight.

What is the cause of continual thumping (appears to be coming from back of car) and violently shaking?

Many times, rear tires that are out of round or severely cupped or feathered, or that are out of balance can create this type of issue. My first recommendation would be to have them and the wheels on the rear of the car inspected. There may not seem like there is much wrong visibly if you look at just the tread of the tires, but a good tire tech can spin them up and give you some solutions, and the inspection itself is inexpensive. Hope this helps.

My tire is making thumping noise

THUMPING TIRE: Check the tires for a Bubble, even new tires can have a Bubble. If you don't see a Bubble just slide your hand around on the sidewalls and tread feeling for a bubble...OR Take it back where you bought the new tires.

The car is making a thumping noise like the the rotor is warped or the balance is off but the rotor was replaced today and the tires are balanced

one of your ties could be loosing a tread,, balancing them will not show this up until the tire is actually holding weight and moving down the road, does it change at different speeds? take the car back to whoever you got the tires from, point out the area where the problem is, and ask them to check that tire,, and tell them to test drive it and you go with them to point it out

I believe it's a tire noise. It was making a noise and so I had the tires rotated. Different road surfaces the louder the noise. Going slow I really can' hear it. Since the tires have been rotated now...

Have the hubs inspected and the tires balanced. The wheel/tire assembly out of balance will cause the over 60 mph wobble/ steering wheel shake or drone. When did this occur or has it been going on for a while now?

Thumping noise in the front end

Inspect your tires look at the tread, observe the wear across the tread, inspect the inner and outer side walls, look for bubbles, look at the rim look for damage. The more info you get the better.

Whirring noise from the front of car as you drive.

I would first rule out the possibility of a "rough" tire making the noise. You can move the two front tires to the rear of the vehicle and see if that changes the noise any. If it does, you might have a worn tire that needs replacing or a tire that has worn unevenly and should be rotated and balanced more often....

Good luck..
