Question about 2004 GMC Envoy

1 Answer

After a smog check that involved a temperature sensor replacement, I began experiencing a low oil pressure warning when I tried to start the engine. The oil was low and I added oil. This seemed to stop the issue but it has now happened again. The oil was once again low, I added oil but it took longer for the engine to turn over but eventually did. Any ideas what might be wrong?

The same thing just happened to my car -- I got it smogged, and within 24 hrs my change oil light came on. I just recently had an oil change done, so I could not figure out why it happened. Today is Sunday, and the place I go to get my oil changed isn't open, but I did notice when driving just up the street that I seemed to be leaking oil in the parking lot. I went back home and saw leaked oil in my parking space. My car has never had an oil leak before and now suddenly after the smog it has one. I am trying to find out what might have caused it, and could it be something that the smog check repair place should be held responsible for???

I experienced twice an orange engine oil pressure warning light and after the car wont move. I switched off the car and after ten minutes it moved. what is the problem

While an electrical fault or a faulty switch could put the light on, it is such an important light it should never be ignored and the reason for it established immediately. As far as the owner is concerned that means lifting the bonnet and checking the oil level and adding more if the level is low. If it isn't low the car should be recovered to a repair shop. Driving further could be very expensive and very inconvenient...

If the oil pressure light has switched on because the oil pressure is low then continuing to drive will soon wreck the crankshaft bearings or cause crankshaft or camshaft seizure. Damage happens so quickly if the oil pressure is lost at motorway speeds the engine is likely to be severely damaged by the time the car is stopped.

I strongly suggest you have the reason for the light switching on established and repaired.

Engine clatter

Have a mechanic or shop put a mechanical oil pressure gauge in the oil pressure sending unit's mounting hole. Check oil pressure against the spec for your car. Does the warning light turn on every time this happens? If so, try to check oil pressure when the light is on-you may have an intermittent oil pressure problem, or oil pressure may just be too low. Don't believe it's a sensor, don't know how, but not familiar with your newer ride. Something as simple as a pick up tube gasket that leaks could cause low oil pressure. If that happens, the top end of engine will clatter-not getting enough oil up there.

The oil light comes on at times and goes off as the rpms go up. What can be done about the light?

Maybe your engine is idling too slowly, If the revs are below say 700rpm the low pressure warning light could come on especially when the engine is hot.. If the idle speed is ok try a heavier grade of oil in the engine. Next try a new oil pressure sensor. It's got to be one of these things. Check the engine running temperature . An over-hot engine will cause the oil light to come on too.

What does a low oil pressure alarm mean

It means the sensor that detects your oil pressure has seen a situation where the oil pressure is too low and engine damage will result. Could be just a bad sensor, but better have it checked with a mechanical gauge to see exactly what the pressure is.

Add Coolant to spherical reservoir at right rear of engine compartment as viewed from front. If it is low the coolant gauge flashing light will warn you of a low condition.

Flickering oil light

This could be two unassociated problems; the flickering oil light can indicate that the pressure sensor for the idiot light is failing- this is not uncommon, the other can be a failed temperature sensor sensor on the main radiator.
The low oil pressure condition may also be indicative of a worn engine part or parts. It would make sense to have the actual oil pressure checked in a shop to see if it is in the normal range which should lay between ~30 & 60 pounds depending on engine RPMs and engine temperature. The idiot lights trigger at around 4-5 pounds and this is really pretty late for a warning; if the pressure is actually that low, not only lubrication is too little but the cooling effect of the circulating oil is inadequate.
If it was my car, I would replace both sensors before getting too worried. The cost of these together (parts only) should be well under $50 US.
