Question about 1999 Suzuki Vitara

No dashboard/ignition lights. New distributor and rotor fitted after car just stopped running. AA mechanic suggested this course of action. Not firing at all, but turning over.

Check your fuses if you have no power in the dash it indicates that the PCM (computer)has no power either you must get power back,check all the fuses then trace power cables from battery to inside vehicle somewhere it is lost.once the dash lights come back your car will start.if the distributor is connected right.hope this helps you.

Starts fine one time and then refuses to start.


If this is a conversion from old points style to HEI modern style, the problem may be the resistance wire is still in the circuit, which should have been removed from the power circuit to the distributor.
If the ignition coil reads 12 volts to its 12 volts terminal, then you should replace the ignition module, furthermore, a pickup coil and sprocket can also be replaced from under the rotor but the distributor needs to be removed and disassembled to get to the pickup coil and sprocket. Some Fords don't need to be removed but do need some disassembling to replace all of its electrical components.

Oldsmobile alero 2001 making clicking noise wont stop


There can be a LOT of reasons for this. I assume you've been all through the car and found no loose objects, so the next best suspects are loose mechanical or electrical connections. If the noise is deep inside the dashboard, or under the car, you can TRY to locate and fix it, but should probably go to the dealer. If the noise is from the engine area, maybe it's an ignition wire arc-ing out (does the motor idle any rougher than it used to?). You can check by pulling into a garage or other dark place, opening the hood, and looking for a spark-light that makes the click. A handy person can fix this by installing a new wire set, maybe $50 or less. As long as THAT's happening, you might as well change the plugs, distributor, rotor and any other ignition bits requiring regular maintenance.

How to remove the pick-up coil from the distributor. 1989 GMC 1500 4X4


The distributor does have to be removed and dis-assembled in order to replace the ignition pick-up coil/stator, and if the pick-up coil/stator is faulty then the distributor should be replaced because the distributor will come with a new pick-up coil/stator and the old distributor will have to be removed anyway and in the long run it will actually save money from not having to pay a mechanic to remove and dis-assemble the distributor to replace the pick-up coil/stator, however most of the time it is the ignition module inside of the distributor that is faulty.




When the engine is at TDC (Top Dead Center) is the ignition rotor pointing to the #1 position on the distributor housing as described below?



The engine should be set on TDC (Top Dead Center) with the distributor cap removed, and there is a mark or notch on the distributor housing that the rotor should be pointing to when the engine is on top dead center. (Look under the distributor cap and find where the number one terminal runs under the distributor cap, and where that position on the distributor cap corresponds with the distributor housing, and it should match up to a mark or a notch on the distributor housing)

This static timing is all that matters and the computer will be able to control the timing as long as the ignition rotor is in that position when the engine is at top dead center.



If the engine is at TDC and the ignition rotor does not point to the #1 mark on the distributor housing, then loosen the hold down bolt to the distributor and turn the distributor until the rotor is pointing to the #1 mark on the distributor and then tighten the distributor hold down bolt.

As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you replace the distributor coil. If the coil is worn out there will be no spark to the distributor going to the plugs. Once replaced you'll be good.

I need to know how to set the distrubtor


The ignition timing is not adjusted with a timing light or with the engine running, and to set the ignition timing follow these procedures.

There is a mark or notch on the distributor housing that the rotor should be pointing to when the engine is on TDC. (Top Dead Center) This "Static" timing is all that matters and the computer will be able to control the timing as long as the ignition rotor is in that position when the engine is at TDC.

1. Place the engine at top dead center.

2. Look under the distributor cap and find where the number one terminal runs under the distributor cap, and where that position on the distributor cap corresponds with the distributor housing, and it should match up to a mark or a notch on the distributor housing (usually has a #6 for 6 cylinder engines or a #8 for 8 cylinder engines) indicating the number one TDC alignment position.

3. With the engine on top dead center the ignition rotor should be pointing to the number one TDC alignment mark or notch that is on the distributor housing, if it is not then loosen up the distributor and turn the distributor until the ignition rotor is pointing to and aligned with the TDC alignment mark or notch on the distributor housing and then tighten down the distributor, the engine should now be "Static" timed. (The more precise that you are aligning the TDC alignment mark with the ignition rotor the better the engine will run, and it will be less likely that there will be a camshaft to crankshaft correlation problem)

If the distributor can not be turned enough to align the ignition rotor with the number one TDC alignment mark on the distributor housing, or the distributor does not set properly and will not allow the installation of the spark plug wires then the distributor is not installed correctly and is most likely a tooth off and it will need to be re-installed correctly. (The distributor should set like it is shown in the firing order diagram when it is properly installed)

Here is a firing order diagram to also help assist you.

Some distributors have the hold down bracket secured onto the distributor housing and the distributor can not be turned into alignment and then tightened down into that position, and these distributors will only fit into the engine and correctly align on "Static" timing one certain way, and when it is correct the distributor hold down bracket bolt can be installed and the TDC alignment mark on the distributor housing will remain properly aligned with the ignition rotor.

1993 VW Cabriolet stopped running at stop sign. Would not restart. Replaced coil, cap and rotor. Car still will not start. No spark coming out of new coil to distributor. Timing light shows no spark...


I would remove and verify the rotor is turning when the motor is cranked over, you may have a broken timing belt. Also check the ignition control module which is mounted under the hood, driver side, upper firewall, mounted below plastic drip tray.

How to remove distributor on a 1998 gmc pick up with 5.0 engine, do I have to mark anything or just take off bolt and pull out.


You need to mark in 2 places. With the cap off mark the position of the rotor button on the distributor housing first. Then you need to make a mark on the distributor housing that will line up with a mark on the engine itself.
When you put the distributor back in back the rotor button up before you put it in because the cam gear will turn it ahead as it seats. For example, if the rotor button is at 3 o'clock then back it up to 1 o;clock.
Don't force the distributor down at the end because you can damage the end that drives the oil pump. Fidle and wiggle it as you push and it should line up and drop onto the oil pump. Also DON'T turn the engine over while it's out or you will have to retime the engine. Hope this helps.

Motor stalls when driving then starts and stalls right away.


Replace the distributor's magnetic pickup located inside the distributor surrounding the distributor shaft, the only other thing thankfully on this ignition system if memory serves me on the f 150 straight six 300 cu inch is the dura spark ignition control box, of course do the obvious tune up parts replacement dist.cap rotor,plug , sparkplugs before spending the $40.00 - $50.00 bucks on the dist.. pick up, you may have a weak a fuel pump check for adequate fuel pressure at carb 7 - 10 lbs.
