My 2001 Disco V8 suddenly overheated whilst waiting at traffic lights today. After the 30 seconds the car returned to normal temperature and continues to drive normally!! Is this a warning on the head gasket? The car has a FSH and is constantly had oil checks etc.

No its not the head gasket its more likely you have lost water from the coolant, id recomend you top it up as there may be air inside the water system

For over heating it is not necessary always that head leakage is the problem, it could be radiator fan not working, first check this with technician, might be the fuse problem. don't worry.

Overheating problem, what is the most probable cause?

You need to stop using it immediately before you
cause some damage or more than you may already have
That is just common sense. It should not overheat or
be any different than it was in the past without problem

The car has to be checked over/diagnosed,tested,etc for
various issues to resolve

Borrow or Rent a car until resolved

No way to guess at the problem

You should have some type of codes avail even
if the check light isn't on,you need professional help
to get a start on resolving

The timing belt maybe worn & jumped or the head gasket

Over heating isn't usually a cheap repair unless the thermostat
sticks partially closed

The RPM moves around the car is 11 years old,so it may just
need a though going over

Timing Belt,O2 Sensors,Exhaust Converter,Spark Plugs
and such

If you depend on a repair shop to do things & don't
have the knowledge to request work done throughout
the year, then you run into a lack of proactive preventative
maintenance situation. Most things are simple looking
back, once resolved

Linconl Ls got hot in town. never has before. no leaks. no coolant in oil.

hi your overheating problem could be the electric fan not working, you would not know this until you were stopped in traffic or were held up.Easy way to check is if your car is overheating whilst in town or traffic and not, when going along at 25mph plus,is check and listen to hear if fan is on when temperature is up at hot or over halfway.Could be the fan itself or a fuse.

Engine overheating warning light comes on in traffic and temperature guage needle pegs, has happened in 30 degree and 80 degree weather, isn' there a fan that is supposed to kick in and if so does it run...

You are correct.
There is an electric fan that activates via a temperature sensor. And this all is protected by a fuse.
Check the fuse panel it may be simply replacing the fuse will resolve the problem. If the fuse blows again have it checked for a short. Temperature sensor could also be bad and need replacing.
Hope this helps!
