First off an engine code 7 would mean it is a DOHC and an SW2, not SW1.

Do you have a dealer filter or aftermarket? The aftermarket have fitment issues (as well as flow issues) and it is best to use a dealer one.

Second, make sure the magnet is not on the filter area where it spins on. That can be removed during the first transmission fluid and filter change. It is only put on from the factory and removed afterward.

I have a 1993 Chevy WT1500 pickup with a leaking transmission.

did you use lock tight on the torque converter bolts when installing them? it may be coming loose and ruining the seals. It doesn't take much. You may have some kind of buildup on your output shaft or a bur of some type that is cutting the seal. Check the outside hub of the torque conv. for roughness or spurs. The seals should work if everything is done right.

The codes do not necessarily indicate any failed parts. You have to troubleshoot the system to figure out why the light is coming on. It might just be a loose wire somewhere. What codes have you been getting?

No, the transmission can be removed without doing that. You will need to support the engine.

1999 saturn sl2 transmission wont shift from 1st gear

Your valve body and possibly input shaft nut need to be replaced. The valve body's booster valve is worn down and won't create pressure. Before it went completely out it slammed on the input shaft nut and loosened it.

You need to replace the valve body and retorque the input shaft nut. The transmission is not junk. The above needs to be replaced and change the filter and fluid and do it every 20K miles.

Oil filter

You probably could if the threads are the same. Aside from military vehicles I have worked on, the Saturn was the first car I worked on with a spin-on trans filter. Most auto parts stores carry the transmission filter for Saturns and they are not that much more than an oil filter.
