No its not a defect you have a wiring problem and you should have it checked by a qualified mechanic.

You air bag will not work if that light is on. And the check engine light is a totally different issue, you will need to find out what code is making the light come on.

Any major parts store can give you that info for free.

"check engine" light is on in vehicle

A bad MAF (mass air flow) sensor can cause this issue. If you know what you are looking for, unplug the sensor and see if the car runs better. If it does then the sensor is bad.

1998 Contour turn signal problem

Check the plugs on the back lights. There must be a bad ground. Remove the light from the socket in the rear light, then depress the metal wire that holds the plug onto the light receptacle. Clean the contacts and ensure they are free from corrosion and rust. Try putting some dieelectric grease on the contacts. NOTE: The center wire BLACK is ground, and you could splice a wire from it to the metal of the car via one of the screws, on both sides, if after cleaning both sides they still dont work.

Check your timing belt by carefully removing the timing belt pulley cover to the left of the valve cover. The valve cover houses the spark plugs. You should be able to flash a flashlight down and see your timing belt. Most likely, you have a timing belt going, or a shaving stuck in your VCT solenoid. I'm guessing the belt is worn and has slipped a tooth or two. I would take caution driving it as it's been disputed that it could be an interference engine, and you could do serious damage to your vehicle.

Take it back to the shop who did the work and make sure all the engine wire connectors are on and locked, also check the air inlet hoses to the engine for loose clamps
