Question about 2004 GMC Envoy

1 Answer

Oil pressure low indication after I shut off the engine. Pressue was 40-50 when idle-running. Problem started just after a smog check was performed in which the temp. sesor was replaced. Oil seemd almost drained. I added oil and it ran fine for a few days but now the problem has returned.

Oil pressure should be low after you shut off engine...when the engine is off there is NO oil pressure.

I think you may want to rephrase your question.

Why does oil light stay on when oil level is okay?

The oil light is not an indication of oil level; rather it is an indication of oil pressure. If the oil pressure is low enough to light the oil light, you should be hearing some rattling in the engine. Otherwise, it is possible that the oil pressure sending unit is defective. You are lucky if that is the case, because some vehicles are wired that if the oil pressure sensor indicates low pressure, the engine will shut down to protect itself. You should have the oil pressure checked with a mechanical gauge ASAP and take whatever corrective measures are necessary.

On a 06 Chevy Impala 3.5 what do I need to change when the car shuts off and across the dash it says starting disabled service throttle and the oil light come on and it says low oil pressure engine

Newer cars use what is referred to as "Drive by Wire. Instead of a throttle cable that goes to the throttle body, there is a sensor on the gas pedal and another on the throttle body. The signal from the pedal is sent to the ECM, analyzed, and transmitted to the throttle body to perform the desired operation. If something in that chain breaks down, the car is disabled as a safety feature, so that you wouldn't have, say, a wide open throttle issue to deal with. That is what the "starting disabled, service throttle" means. As far as the oil light and low oil pressure indications, if the key is on, and the engine is not running, these are normal indications since there is no oil pressure in the engine when it is not running.

My Ford f-150 started this morning but engine shut off with the check gauge indicator light on. Oil pressure is low, oil leaked onto driveway. Engine cranks but will not start. No smoke or burning sme

Tony,
don't run it with low oil pressure - you will damage the engine. WHere did the oil leak out? Is it staying in now? Not sure what you mean by "check gauge" - maybe check engine? If you can pull the codes from the ECU that may help. WHere is the oil level on the dip stick? reply via comment to the orignial question.

At idle the oil pressure light comes on

i would say the car is safe to drive.IF the pressure sensor was working correctly, and your engine was a complete dog, then you would expect there to be some loss of oil pressure, but not 0 to 4bar in a blip of the throttle.given that the oil pressure sensor is a common fault (and it controlls the oil pressure light, it is not a seperate switch), i would say the sensor has a 'dead' spot on it, and a blip of the throttle just sees it outside the dead zone of its reading, and pings back to 4bar (its natural to get a slight rise in oil pressure when higher revs are acheived). 4bar is the right value, its what mine sits at. maybe a tiny bit under (3.95) when the engine is very hot/in traffic the oil pressure is reading just over 4 at all times, dosent go up or when accelerate or down at idle is this normal, used to mercedes W124 where it can register .3 up on idle but when accelerate it should goto max, ie 3 bar Whats the mileage on the car. Sounds like It certainly is suffering from low oil pressure at tickover, but loads of cars do and continue running for thousands of miles. blue/white smoke on start up and that points to valve seals and, yes, the head would have to come off to replace them, but it's normally just blue smoke. White smoke points more to head gasket, but that would be replaced anyway when doing the valves.Bet the engine sounds smooth as silk too
Oil pressure is determined by the rate at which oil flows through the internal combustion engine of a car. Low oil pressure is a real danger for engines, as it indicates that the bearings in an engine have worn, allowing the oil to flow more easily and at a lower pressure. However, high oil pressure is generally not a concern for motorists. Oil pressure fluctuates with the heat of a machine, and though high oil pressure can indicate a serious problem, it generally means the engine is in an adjustment period.Oil Pressure at Idle For many cars, oil pressure is much higher upon start-up or while idling. The reason for this has to do with the temperature of the engine. When an engine has been sitting turned off, it cools down, as does the oil that flows through the machine. Upon start-up, the engine temperature begins to rise. As it rises, so to must the oil heat up to find a level pressure to flow through the machine. Cooled oil is thicker, causing it to flow more slowly and at a higher pressure through the machine, until it reaches its optimal operating temperature.Pressure Relief Valve Recurrent high oil pressure, even after the machine has been running for a while, can indicate a problem with the pressure relief valve. The pressure relief valve is responsible for regulating oil pressure throughout the internal combustion engine. It is a safety device intended to keep vessels or piping from experiencing extreme pressure. When this device is malfunctioning, it will cause high oil pressure in an automobile.Types of Oil The type of oil put into an engine can also account for extremes in oil pressure. Low-weight or thin oils will operate with low oil pressure, as they will pass through the machine quite easily. Thicker oil will pass through the machine at higher oil pressure readings. Generally, after an oil change, when fresh oil is introduced into the machine, oil pressure will increase. This, however, is only a sign that the oil that formerly operated your car was too thin for optimal performance.

Sensor oiel what it does when he is not good

I think what was meant is the oil pressure sensor which is a pressure switch and indicates the pressure when the engine runs. This is very much critical as a low pressure will show up as an error- check engine /oil- and can shut off the ECM.
So if the pressure sensor is bad it will indicate or if the oil pressure is low it will be sensed to indicate for action.-- check oil ,oil filter or oil pump.

Low oil light came on 2005 equinox checked oil it was low there is a ticking sound. I put 2 quarts in started back up, light is still on also still ticking.

The lifters have to be primed with oil. This may take a while. Let the engine run, after a while the oil pressue light will go out, and the clicking will stop. If you have lost oil pressure the engine will shut off as a safe guard so it is alright to let the engine run while clicking as long as you have oil in the case.

What is the check gauges light

CHECK GAGES light (1) indicates a potential engine failure(low oil pressure, low coolant, coolant overheating) has occurred.
· Check gages and shut down engine. Gages should read as follows: Oil pressure 5 to 10 psi (34 to 69 kPa) at idle; Water Temp gage below 230 degrees (110 C).
· Check engine oil level (Para 2-11) if OIL PRESS gage indicates low reading. Check coolant level (Para 2-11) if Water Temp gage indicates high reading. Notify Unit Maintenance if levels are low.

If CHECK ENGINE light (2) is on, check engine oil pressure gage (3) and water temperature gage (4). If both indicate normal, proceed with mission and then notify Unit Maintenance. If either one does not indicate normal, stop engine immediately and notify Unit Maintenance

Engine oil light is showing on the dash board after switching on

Most important thing you need to do is to establish the actual oil pressure. put a mechanical gauge on the engine and read real oil pressure. If pressure is low (min is 15psi, I prefer to see at least 20 at idle) there is an internal problem...bearings etc. If pressure is good, sending unit has failed...replace it. I would not drive it 'till the oil pressure is verified as being safe. You might get lucky and someone just forgot to plug in the sending unit, but it must be checked!!!
good luck

1991 dodge colt won't idle when engine is cold.

probably oil, it may be too thick when it's cold but once it warms up it liquefies and your engine runs smoothly. you could try changing oil, I'm guessing if you have a high performance oil the chances this is the problem may be greater since high performance things are usually geared towards working well when everything is hot
