Fuel pump troubleshooting

First check the fuses... with a volt meter.. don't just look at them.. When you turn on the key the ign switch powers up the computer... .. The computer sends a single to a relay.. the relay comes on for 1.5 seconds when you turn the key to on to charge the system.. after you crank it for a few turns the fuel pump come on to keep the engine running. Turn the key to on and listen for that 1.5 sec. pump run.. if you have to go under the car and have somebody else turn the key.. if you hear it running then the fuel pump runs.. if you do not hear it run check that the ign switch is sending power to the acessories/computer. then check the relay to see if it is operating when you turn the key to on.. listen to it and touch it.. yyou should be able to hear it and feel it click. Just because the pump is running does not mean that it is the next step is to hook up a pressure guage to the fuel rail and see if there is any pressure. (Harbor freight tools if you do not have one) You can jump the pump with a 12v wire.. jump it at the pump connector on top of the tank. if it runs check the fuel pressure.. if there is none.. or very little the pump is bad.. or the fuel filter is clogged.. or the pick-up filter in the tank attached to the pump is clogged.

Why is my 1991 ford ranger hard to start and i have a new fuel filter, spark plugs and battery?

Turn key to on for 5 sec then off 5 sec then on 5 sec then off 5 sec then on 5 sec then off 5 sec then start. If start good = loss of fuel pressure. Probably the fuel pump if this is the case but could be fuel leak, return stuck partially open, leaking injector into the motor etc but likly pump. Let me know how you go with the on off test

The car will start but wont stay running it sputters then dies

Sounds like bad fuel pressure. Check fuel pump and fuel pressure off the rail. Also a severely clogged fuel filter can cause that.

1997 Chevy Silverado, Starting issue: I have changed plugs/wires/rotor/cap/fuel filter/air filter, etc,,,. Still diificult to start takes any where from 5 -15 cranks, ready to replace fuel pump again after...

The best way to help find the problem, is to have a fuel pressure test done on it, that will tell if the fuel pump is weak, or the fuel pressure regulator is malfunctioning. If the pressure is low, the fuel pump is weak,
if it is high, the fuel regulator is at fault.

Truck dying

there are a few things that would cause that wo all i can tell u from what u said is that u need to check for fuel pressure w/ a gauge then look up the specs online. if u lose pressure after start up the fuel pump is bad. but if it stays good as the truck dies then u do have other issues that someone would have to look it over. u could have a ignition module heating up and opening the circuit or an electronic coolant temperature sensor reading -40 or 300 starving or flooding the engine with fuel pull out a spark plug and ground the threads onto something. and check for spark as it dies. if it stops sparking then u need to look into the ignition system. if it does not then you are looking at a fuel problem or a cam positing sensor. which could shut off fuel injector pulse and ignition fire. like i said alot of componets could cause irratic behavior like this ull just have to start off with the basics fuel and fire before you can jump to any conclusions. oh and fuel filters would cause the engine to run bad but not kill it all at once and keep it from starting. one way to rule that out is to turn the key one for 2 secs then off for 6 secs and repeat a few times this turns on the fuel pump for priming iu the system. if it still does not fire up then somethin else is going on other than the fuel filter.

I have a 95 Maxima I changed the fuel injectors and now the car wont start.  so i put the old injectors back and it still wont turn over,  It stay on for about 2 sec can anyone help me

I assume you bled off fuel pressure before you installed the injectors. Try this to pressurize the fuel system. Turn the key to "on" position and wait 5 seconds. AT same time, listen carefully for a buzz sound that means the fuel pump is running to pressurize the system. It will shut off after 5 seconds. Then, turn off the key and wait 30 seconds for the computer power relay to shut off. Then, turn the key to "on" again. Thsi will run the fuel pump for another 5 seconds. Repeat 5 times. Fuel system should be pressurized now.
If it doesn't start now, you may have done something while you were changing the injector. good luck
