Key no longer works in ignition. I stopped to gas up and the key I normally use would not open the gas cap door. I re-entered the car and the key would not turn the ignition. The key unlocks the steering column and the radio etc will work but not the ignition. Tried a spare key, which did open the gas cap door, but it too will not turn the ignition. I think a small piece of the original key broke off in the ignition, and is preventing the spare from working. I think that is why the original key would not open the gas cap door. What can be done?

Take it to a lock smith to remove the broken part or you could jam the broken part down to where the ignition will turn with the broken key. I advise taking it to a lock smith to remove the broken part

get the fob checked at a dealer as this sends random signals to the ign system as part of the alarm/anti theft systems ,if ign system not getting signal the anti theft system thinks cars being stolen ,using correct key in ign lets you dive vehicle but you may be storing up more problems the longer you leave it
It is normal operation for the odometer to light up with the driver's door being opened. It is not normal for the chime to go off. The "Key-In Switch" in your steering column is malfunctioning. The body control computer "Thinks" the key is in the ignition when it is not. It usually requires a new key tumbler assembly to fix this.
It's possible that your key is bad or no longer works. A way to verify that it is a key problem is to see if the 2nd key or spare key works properly. Check the side of the remote key for a 3 digit #. if the key variant is less then 221 the way to reset it is to put it in the ignition and pull it out 5x with 8secs. If higher than 221 then the no need to try and reset remote key.
I simply opened the bonnet. Connected the battery charge positive to the + feed on the back of the alternator, connected the negative to the body. Turned it on, immediately the interior light comes on. Turn on the ignition press the cabin boot switch and it opens the boot. Charge battery as normal. Easy Peezy
Hold both buttons the Open and the Lock on your remote key for about 60 seconds, it should turn the lights inside the car and the problem should be fixed.
