Question about 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
The linkage rod from the outside column to the transmission selector came loose at the trans selector you will need a wrench and go under and set it back up for proper operation of all gears

The linkage from the column to your transmission may be the cause .
Put them together and try again .Look underneath your car where the steering wheel is towards the front a little ...you make someone shift the gears and you watch what happens .You may be able to see it where the problem is .It may be a pin that fell on the ground.
