3 Answers

I have a trouble code 42 in a 1983 buick riviera with a 307 v8 auto zone told me to time it to 20 degrees btdc like they said after i tuned up the engine i did it again it was off seems to run fine butdoesnt idle until warmed up and then it lopes got a feeling itl be out again but i dont know how to clear code. also there is a bussing sound comming from an item on the passenger rear side of the carb hooked up to the heater line, i think it has to do with the climate control.

this is a 1983 307 about as popular as you can get and the noise is comming from the climate control sensor its electronic not vacuum controled. I think i have to fix that in order to clear the codes its the same as that era of caddy it has an obd I system.how do i clear the code after i timed it and what do i need to do to get it top idle when cold and i mean 4os i live in AZ.

On this old boat you can clear the codes by disconnecting the battery for about 10 seconds.Always disconnect the ground cable.Code 42 is for the electronic spark timing. The ignition module can cause this code.It is in the distributor. Also when checking the timing you have to put it in bypass mode.To do this you have to jump terminals A and B on the diagnostic connector under the drivers side dash. The timing should be at 20 degrees at 11000 rpm in park.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Sorry but I found the other specs.for timing. This should be the right ones. You have to remove the vacuum hose from the distributor and disconnect the 4 wire connector at the distributor.Make sure it is at low idle when you set the timing.Do not jumper the A and B terminals. But to clear the codes just remove the battery ground like I said or you can remove the ECM fuse.Make sure that there are no vacuum leaks. Also make sure the egr valve is not stuck partially open.

My book says trouble code 42 is (EST circuit fault) EST stands for electronic spark timing. But it sounds like you already know that. When you set the timing you are jumpering between A & B terminal on the ALDL correct?

With a code 42 most likely when the car was at the correct timing it prabably ran pretty sluggish. What this code is about is you engine does not change timing which is needed in order to keep up with the compression as the RPM's increase.

Pinch off the line that is buzzing with pliers is you can. This may be a vacuum leak in the valve. If the engine smooths out then this valve definitely is a problem.

A far as the code 42 the diagnostic flow chart basically says to do a bunch of testing and depending on the results you either have a poor connection on the distributor or the ECM or the HEI module.

If all the connections were deemed good then only the HEI module or the ECM are recommended as being the problem.

Your car may have other issue but first thing is to get the idle and the timing working like there suppose to.

Also these older cars really like a accurate coolant sensor. As they fail car generally become harder to start because you need more fuel so they falter until the engine is hot enough for less fuel.

These cars have so many valves that the best bet is to take a picture and post it so someone can tell what' is. The worst thing is parts arn't that easy to come by. You may find yourself at a junkyard lookeng for a replacement part.

Switch For check engine light

There is no switch for the Check Engine Light!
The ECM turns the light on when a Diagnostic Trouble Code is set!
The light can be turned off with a Diagnostic Scanner when the code is retrieved but will return if the problem isn't repaired!

Advanced Auto Parts and Auto Zone will scan it for Free,I'd find out what the codes are and go from there!

1990 riviera oil pressure guage goes nuts when accelerating. can just a sensor be replaced?

Could be. Check the wiring at the oil pressure sending unit. If the wiring is good, replace the sensor. It is located Under hood, passenger side, rear engine area, above oil filter, mounted on lower timing cover. Curtorsey: Auto Zone.

97 buick riviera check engine light

The code is for the TPS , several things can cause this tps not plugged in , or plugged in after the car was started. If the car runs good go to auto zone let them erase the code for free with their scanner and then see if it comes back on. most likely it was just a accident. but go check to make sure it is plugged in and that the wires to it are not pinched in any way.

A 10 deg BTDC is the initial set and a 0 deg is ECM controlled timing at idle.
