Question about 1995 Chevrolet C/K 3500

3 Answers

I was hit very slightly on the front axle by a motorhome. The motorhome hit me moving about 2 miles per hour. Everything looked normal and as I moved away the front axle seemed to be rubbing or like something was stuck in that axle area a little smoke was visible however I kept moving the truck and had to steer it to the right to control because it kept pulling to the left. Anyhow drove home for 2-hours and next day it was undriveable. Replaced the caliper and brakes and master cylinder and the caliper locks completely still and we just cant figure it out

What is a linkage? Is that different from the chasis?

  • lovinlosange Feb 02, 2010

Another theory is that the "ABS" system is no good anymore and is also another reason for the problem I described. Could that be accurate?

I am still working on this resolution and will provide some feedback once my problem has been fixed using this recommendation.

I would jack up agian spinn wheel then reapply brakes and try respinning if it still drags remove caliper and try to turn wheel agian could be bent spindle or damaged wheel bearings if spins good then suspect caliper alighment to mounting make sure caliper slides freely when piston is pushed all the way back if it does then reassemble and reapply brakes to create the drag problem then loosen brake hose at the caliper and try to freely spin wheel if it spinns suspect brake hose if this is a k model then check axle tube for damage from cv shaft to front differental then youll know hope this helps Thunderboltz

Hello. Get the front end checked over as it sounds like your linkage is now out of adjustment. You probably will also need a front end alignment. Regards, Joe

Wow you do ha
ve a big problem and it must
be quite upsetting. I will try to help you.

F.irst forget about the speed of the impact it is the mass at speed, albeit slow in your case, that does the damage. Somehow get the truck to a body shop or any allienment shop. I suspect that the frame is out.

good luck, let me know

HOW LONG DOES IT USUALLY TAKE A MECHANIC TO PUT VELOCITY JOINTS ON THE FRONT OF MY VUE?

Are you looking for book time or actual time. Book time is what you are billed for and i would guess it would be in the neighborhood of an hour per side up to 2 hours per side.

O good experienced tech can hang a drive axle on most vehicles in about 30-40 minutes. This would include pulling the tire, removing the axle nut, seperating the lower ball joint, separating the axle from the hub, Separating the axle from the transmission, and then reinstalling.

I have a 66 mustang when i drive at 45 miles per hour, it makes a grinding noise and shakes. what can it be?

Could be a bad universal joint. I have a '65 Mustang, once when I installed the drive shaft, I put the rear u-joint into the axle slightly off-center. It would shake rather badly at about 45 MPH, but was mostly smooth above 50 or below 40. I thought it was a wheel balance problem, but it was just the driveshaft being slightly off-center.

Vehicle hakes when driving 45 to 50 miles per hour

Check wheel balance,
check steering linkages for loosness - such as tie rod ends, steering rack linkages etc,
check driveline for worn/loose joints and bearings.

Tires are making a roaring noise while driving

Either the tires have slippe belts in them, mainly old or worn tires. Or more common is one of your wheel bearings is going bad. Could also be an axle shaft. Jack up the front of the vehicle and grab the wheel and see if you can move it up/down or side to side. see if there is excess play to check wheel bearing issues

no the ring and pinion seems ok from what you are saying...you wouldn't smell it up front while moving do to wind and what not,
oil can smell at low temps.
you may have an exhaust leak at an O2 sensor seal. or something relative to that.

Car stoped moving

there is the chance of yes and there is that chance of no
the axle if seized in the pumpkin i call it yes the car wont move
axles are balanced so that the car runs smooth if car stopped moving then the axle siezed up
if the nut came off you put a new nut on with one of those fast clips i forgot what there called but there is a little hole drilled on axle to keep nut from moving and it looks like a bobby pin can slide in there but thats not what the certain pin is called

you can move the car a little bit without nut in slow idle 2 miles per hour you dont want to stress axle any further than whats been stressed
not stable to drive until replacement nut is put in its place
