Start the Van, and with the engine running, take the Negative Cable off the Batttery and see what happens. This Battery Light on could be an indication that the Alternator is beginning to fail.
If the engine dies, then the alternator is bad.
At higher RPM's does the Battery Light go out?
This would be another indication that the alternator is failing.
How are the belts? Are they worn or slipping?
Take a reading coming off the alternator with the engine is running.
Let me know if this helped, or if you have additional informations or questions. Feel free to contact me at FixYa.com!

The Alternator is rated at 130-amps.

So be careful while doing this

check voltage at the battery terminals while the engine is off, it should be around 12 VDC, then start the engine and check again, should be varied betwen 13 to 14 VDC, and turn the head light and A/C on and check to see if dropped bellow 12 that means alternator regulator is faulty. good luck

I have a chevy lumina 99 and while driving it the red battery light came on and then the orange abs light came on, it still starts and runs but both lights are on.

Check alternator for output. With car running, voltage at battery should be 14-15 VDC. Suspect alternator has failed, and reduced voltage may have set the ABS light. Let me know if you have more questions.

My 99 safari volt meter always stays on about 14 even at idle but recently it has started dropping to about 12 at idle then back to 14 when driving. what is this indicating?

Not necessarily a problem. It depends on MANY things. If you are running lights, heater or AC, brake lights, all of these things can cause what you describe.

At speed (2,000 rpm or so), you need to be 14 volts or higher.

To test:

Fully charge, then load test battery.
If Battery okay, then load test the alternator to check output amps. If no tester is available, often parts stores will test for free.

Check charging system light and check battery light come on at begining of low idle. voltage at battery terminals during high idle was 14.5 vdc, and at low idle 12.65 vdc. engine speed did not seem to...

Your generator is pcm controlled. So is the charge indicator. Any charging system trouble codes? The gencom circuit is signal from pcm to generator. The genmon signal is from generator to pcm. Even at idle if you turn on a load, there should be a reaction, engine speed may increase as well as generator output. By load,I'm talking about headlamps or hvac something. At the moment I can't rule out your generator? I hate to see you replace anything and it not fix it?

With the battery light on and at 14 volts I would suspect that the diode trio is going out and over charging the battery, first check that the battery has fluid in it all the way if it does then have it load tested at a battery shop like all state or sears or any parts store can do a load test for you. Just because it's putting out 14 volts does not mean it's putting out enough amperage, the light is giving you fair warning of an impending problem, have it checked at AutoZone or shucks it does not cost nothing and they can test the alternator output as well.

Your alternator is not putting out any power. To check the alternator, when the motor is running, check the voltage at the battery. If the voltage is not between 13.8 and 14.2 volts, the alternator is malfunctioning. Chances are that the alternator killed your last battery. Make sure that the belt is at the proper tension so that the alternator is producing the voltage neccessary to charge the battery.
